Default How many times have you sohc guys blown your headgasket?

I just blew mine again today for the 3rd time in 7 months...first time i had stock headstuds and boosted too much the first day i had the turbo, second time i had arp headstuds and a copper sprayed gasket..it still blew, now this time i had a resurfaced head, arp headstuds, and a sprayed gasket...still blew. What the heck is going on? Why can't I keep a headgasket sealed for longer than 3 months?

from what i have ben told it is the block twisting that makes the heads lift so easy on the sohc motors,

what do you mean by the block twisting? I just don't get why it happens so often to me. Most people only have it happen once to them. Usually once people get the headstuds and all they don't have anymore problems with it.

what precautions have you been taking? Have you been getting the head resurfaced? Arpstuds? I am gonna put a new head on this time. My friend has a spare y8 head that hopefully will work a little better.

I believe it. I also remember "hellajdm" saying that once he got his block sleeved, his lifting problem went away. Weakness on the sleeves behalf maybe>

yup the blocks torsional strength is now stronger with the sleeves so it resists the twisting,

you guys think i should just get a newer motor? My friend has a spare y8 head laying around that i can have, but if its the block thats the problem then maybe that is what needs replacing. My motor has about 113k on it. Do you think the block has weakened over time? Aside from sleeving my motor what could I do to prevent the block from twisting?

well i have been getting some of that. I can't seem to figure out why though...thats another big problem i've been having. Ever since its gotten cold i can hear slight detonation in 3rd and 4th gear. The funny thing is that my afr is in the low 11's! Also i have major timing backed down in my timing maps. My car has just been pissing me off lately.

What did you torque the ARP studs too? Did you use their supplied lube or motor oil?

"14.1 @100mph with a crappy 60' - uberdata untuned"

Not hating, just suggesting that this *might* be the problem.

If your looking for a new bottom end please check out the forum at http://www.ms1motorsports.com in the for sale section. I have a D16Z6 bottom end for sale that is out of a 92 civic SI. I also have some other parts that might spark your interest. Thanks.

A buddy of mine (he is on the board) blew his head gasket and radiator. The the thermostat was the cause.

Have you had the blocks deck checked fro straightness?
Also a poor milling job on the head will contribute to gasket failure, especially with boosted cars.
