Re: (HiProfile)
BTW if you are tuning with a det can, you should also be tuning with the plugs. You should at minimum check them for the timing lines on the straps at peak torque and near redline. It takes time, but its very accurate. It can also show phantom detonation.
by this do u mean kill the engine at the excat rpm, then pull the plugs and look for spots/pepper on the straps on the plugs? or around the circle part of the bottom of the plug? or both?

yes. Kill the ignition where you want to see what is going on.

The catch is that this is putting the turbo through hell and back.

very true. give and take. But plug reading is more definite than what any gauge will tell you.

Any ideas, or are most of you holding off for pics of the bottom end to comment?

Re: (Si Shane)
i'm weary to believe detonation caused it. I think the stock cylinder walls just couldnt take the pressure based on where the piston was in relation to peak cylinder pressure and it had to break through somewhere.

Re: (98vtec)
unless u have acutal tuning expeirence with honda's on E85, unlike my self, shouldnt start pointing at tuning just yet.
I dont tune, so i really dont know.

More than likely. Some blocks just can't take the beating like others.
But I would like to add.. 96 GSR-T is using NepTune and Si Shane is using Crome. I will tell you right now that the numbers in the columns are not comparable. So take that with a grain of salt. I would like to see someone else running crome and have that much timing in the 20+ psi columns.

Re: (Si Shane)
I agree in giving the motor whatever ignition timing it wants... but if it wasn't on a dyno you really didn't know what it wanted. It could have been making peak power with 5* less advance. Advancing timing until you hear audible detonation is definetly not the way to go about tuning.
Just some other possiblities...
Was a street pull done at WOT after you guys filled up w/ E85 and that's when it blew? Possibility that your E85 was more like E75. Never know unless you test it.
Stock cylinder walls are weak compared to aftermarket sleeves, that's why they make them. There's always the possiblity that you just went past the limits of the stock sleeves.
