500whp and a street tune?
Long story short...My car is almost done, I called my tuner. He says "the dyno is down for at least a month but we can street tune no problem." I asked him if it would be safe to street tune a 500whp CRX and he said "we just street tuned an 800whp Z06." How common is it to street tune a car that will likely make 23 psi or so and make 500+?

Very common... He may not get all the hp out of it you'd want, but many quality tuners do both; street tune the partial throttle and some higher rpm situations, then go to the dyno to finish it off.
Hell, my tuner's street tunes are better than a lot of people's dyno tunes..

Let me clarify here. The reason I feel 4th gear is scary has to do with road conditions. That's why I asked if you knew the roads. My suspension and bushings are all brand new but the roads around here are not good.

I've always done my tuning on the street, from 200whp to 600whp. It happens so quick it doesnt matter, as long as you hook, and your suspension and brakes can handle it.

My tuner does part throttle on the street. I agree with you 4th is gonna be interesting. I know 4th gear pulls in my car is scary and I wouldn't want to do it over and over again as would be needed for tuning. Do you know where you'll be doing it? What roads? I know some people who have access to a private runway. Something like that would be ideal for this.

That has to be one of the worst comparisons I have seen. They aren't even close... in the domestic world they want super long datalogs and the ECU makes TONS of auto corrections. You don't have that on an OBD-1 tuning platform. Either find a new tuner or rent a dyno and bring your tuner with. I don't feel like getting into the whole WOT 4th gear pulls on the street crap again...

Just get a base map and wait till the dyno is ready if your scared of a street tune.

Yes, I know that. I tune cars at our shop. Try tuning a car by listening for det. With the exhausts everybody runs and turbo applications. Crap shoot at best. Reading plugs will get you in the ballpark. But all of the cars I've tuned on the dyno, I have reached MBT without ever seeing det on the plugs, fuel not limiting. Then also, It's gonna be hard to tune the ignition "curve" for that particular combination, it's a different curve every time. If you were to do it yourself on your own time street tuning, you could get it alot "closer" than paying a shop to spend that much time to street tune. There will be a time when It will be hard on the trans to tune on a dyne, but this power level the OP is looking is achievable on a dyne if done correctly.

You use an Electronic Det-Can to solve that issue. A Mechanical Det-Can still has too much background noise especially when the wastegate opens (assuming dumps to atmosphere). With the E-Det-Can you hear only the internal sounds, much nicer.

Re: 500whp and a street tune?
You reach MBT before you hear det. At part throttle it is even worse before you hear det, so......
I guess if you don't have means to a dyne, you could get the car running and close, a dyne is nice to iron out the part throttle sections and getting a more accurate timing curve. But it's all good.

Nottheonion, turn your PM's on. Mbt, best timing. Some people go by Max brake torque. You will reach your max timing before det, if not fuel limited.

Change of plans. PRT Performance out of Lewisville TX will be dyno tuning my ride on a Mustang dyno first week of December!

Re: 500whp and a street tune?
I've been pulled over once doing it when a undercover mustang cop saw me turn around on a back road. Luckily I was having issues and only did a half throttle 3rd gear pull. When he came up to me he was like "I saw you turn around up there and knew exactly what you were doing" lol. I was prepared for the consequences. Just gave me a 88 in a 50.

Re: 500whp and a street tune?
Will he be able to know he has got maximum power? No.
Will he have a real world load on the car to ensure the tune is safe? That depends on traction. I dont think you can safely take that car to red line in 4th gear on public roads while being safe and respectful, and I bet you at 500whp it spins 3rd.
I dont think its gonna work out. If you can make the tires stick, the tune will be safe if he knows what hes doing.
