You have obviously never lifted mid-corner at anywhere near the limit.

Yeah..

If your hauling *** into a turn and your near or at your limit and your engine shuts off or you let off the gas, then your *** end is coming out.

Right, and the only way you aren't going all the way around and into a tree is how? Oh yeah, THROTTLE, which doesn't work since the engine management system has deemed it too dangerous to give you any power. Awesome.

you're right, im not that stupid. but im well aware of what lift throttle oversteer is. i just never have to face it, when i was learning at driving school, i was always taught to left foot brake, so lift throttle oversteer isnt a problem

i didnt even realize this is what you were talking about in the first place. i thought u meant as the motor was melting (not a limiter), and in that case, you wouldnt go from 476 whp straight to 0 whp like a lift throttle would anyways.

further, having a limiter such as some of the big shot turbo road cars have, they dont cut power instanteously so it would never induce a "lift throttle oversteer" senerio.

ok enough of the thread jacking...

so are there any ways to prevent failure on 5th gear pulls? other than good build and good tune?

There is no substitute for a good tune and build. All of this destruction was caused solely by detonation. The stock sleeve did not fail. It was DESTROYED by detonation.
5th gear top end runs are more sustained load than a quick dyno pull and as a result intake air temperatures start to climb rapidly as the intercooler saturates, combustion chamber, valve temperatures rise all bringing the engine closer to the detonation threshold. And if it was close to begin with then boom!
Some OEM turbo applications actually reduce boost levels if sustained for more than a few seconds (some dodge, lotus and some others).

if its properly built and tuned, like i said before, u can do all the top speed runs u want...

What puzzles me is how detonation was severe enough to split a chunk of ductile iron sleeve liner while the cast piston (at least the face) survived...

the piston was a forged CP

Couldn't you just have it add fuel/retard timing against EGT or VSS or time at WOT instead of totally shutting it down when things go lean/hot during long 5th gear pulls? Or what else could you do different to prevent this?
