Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
Might be of interest here. I post often since HT has a lot of great information and a lot more people race over here. Some advice and information is universal in 4cyl, fwd, turbo setups for drag.
Goal is a 2200lb car without driver, 450whp 93oct or 500-550whp 100oct+, 11.5 second 1/4 or better (driver mod necessary), 125mph+ trap, maintain street 'legal' status (currently no check engine light)
If any of that is realistic, I don't know. Weight is a primary goal to reduce strain on the current gearset. 3200lbs from factory in full trim is hard on an O2J transmission.
Motor: 1.8L, 9.5:1 JE's, PTE 6062 billet wheel, 8000 RPM, w/m injection, 830cc @ 3-bar, Peloquin LSD, Raxles racing axles,
Car: interior strip and setup 1/2 way finished

Cool setup and I think your performance goals are definitely possible.
Few suggestions/comments:
Weight - Goal of 2200lbs is probably a stretch.
I've got a mk3 jetta and while it is a VR6 turbo and does have a 10pt cage it weighs in at 2350 without driver. MK3's are naturally lighter than Mk4 and my car has significant weight reduction.
Injectors: I'd go with something a little larger than the 830cc's if 550whp is your goal. They can make it but it will be pushing them a fair bit.
It looks like you might be trading up to a 6262 which I think is a great idea.
Other than that you didn't mention tires but I'm a huge fan of 24.5x15's for mid 11's and it won't require you to change/monkey about with front brakes trying to get a 13" wheel on there nor go up to a 26" tire which is just overkill for 11's.
FWIW I ran 10.9@129 with less power than your 500whp goal and weighing 2600lbs with driver so your goals are achieveable.

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
man, i went 11.90 @ 120.1 on a 1.9 60ft with my '02 GTI.
it was a 1.8 8.5:1 JE/Scat motor
stock AWP small port head
PAG Parts GT3071R kit (53mm)
630cc Eurodyne/Chris tapp file
24.5 slick
STOCK diff O2M 6 speed
single plate Clutch net clutch
Techtonics 2.5inch CATTED Exhaust.
24-25psi on a 93/107 mix on my 104 map.
i had a compression problem all season too. and it still went well.
that was full street trim, only the spare was removed. full interior, stereo, AC still in, front bumper was intact. at 2450 or so with driver it should go easy 10s with 550whp.

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
I'd be very happy with 2400lbs.
This weekend:
-install racing seat
-pull factory wiring for all the electronics I've removed (this will take some time), every inch of it is wrapped like crazy in nasty gooey OEM tape
Next weekend:
-fab glass brackets for rear doors, gut rear doors
-drill out front door speakers, toss out doorcards, mount door latch/window regulator control
-cut webbing from trunk/hood
-sell optima red top battery, replace with Braille replica Batt or other, remove from car, and keep it on charger when car sits for a week at a time
Weekend after:
-fab steering wheel bracket
-fab cluster bracket
-delete huge dash beam
Weekend after:
-cut out spare tire well, install alum sheet
-cut out webbing (non-structural) that was used for some components I've deleted. This is stuff obviously just tack welded in from the factory to hold wire looms or for OEM audio amps, cd changers, or other stuff to mount to

Your performance goals are reasonable, but I do see a conflict with the street legal status and the 2200# weight. You are correct in thinking the only way to get one of those chassis down to 2200# is with gutting and cutting sheetmetal, but that starts crossing over from street car to race car. Good luck with the project.

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
In reading up for my state, the car must keep certain equipment. The only thing inside the passenger compartment that "must" remain by local laws is OEM standard installed safety equipment or a tested and approved equivalent.
That would be seat belts and if your car had any OEM standard equipment airbags. My car still has the standard equipment steering wheel airbag. Seat, curtain airbags were options, therefore not required. Seat belts are still in the car. The Scroth harness is the only DOT and racing series approved harness for a 4th gen Jetta/GLI/GTI/Golf, at the time of purchase in 2006. There are more now.
Does it "look" street legal in the interior. No. Is it by definition, yes.
Lastly, I had the coolant pump fail one day and had steam coming out when I popped the coolant cap off. A local sheriff pulled up behind me to see if I needed help. He looked at the engine bay and interior and said quote: "man, you've got two motors and 1/2 a car!" I replied, "yessir". He said, "need any help with the coolant?". I said, "nosir, calling AAA for a tow." He said, "have a good one, I'll be back by on my patrol in 15 min. If you're still here I'll check to see if you need help." Me, "thanks sir".
So, in my locality, if your exhaust isn't obscene and the exterior isn't "ricey", and you're polite. You're cool.
By racing series, I only mean import bracket racing and track rules. This is fun only. Not going for sfwd or anything. If it ever breaks 11.5 seconds or 125mph, I'll follow the rules and install an approved cage.

Exterior look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z7MVf4uSO0
Dyno of 20psi on a GT3076 last year. Right now only exterior difference is 16" oem wheels up front with drag radials. Car is 100% oem on the exterior with the only differences being:
-cut a slot in rear valence to fit dual 2.5" tip exhaust
-mis-matched front to rear OEM wheels, drag radial up front, standard in rear
-no window tint, OEM or otherwise
-blacked out VW emblem

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
^^^ those slicks look awefully similar to the ones sitting in my shed!
and you shouldnt need 500hp to meet your goals. i do agree that 2200 lbs might be a stretch, but if you can get down to around 2600-2700 you should be able to runs under 11.5 and over 125mph with 450ish. if you plan on running slicks i think you should look into getting a 5 or 6 pt in there.

A few years ago my mk4 GTI was a shade under 2800 with me in it and went 11.7@117 with 400whp. 3071, Revo and 440's and an extra long stud in the fpr to jack the pressure.

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
i wonder why?
hows the car coming? changes since last outting?
yeah i was full weight. terrible 60ft, i wish i could have 1.6/1.7'd on the 11.9 pass, butit was a 1.9x
i went 12.2 @ 118 with a 1.8x 60ft, but i banged the limiter in first (would have been a good 11.8x pass i think.

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
you can do it no problem even with a bit extra weight.
Run the maestro 1000cc file good to 650whp and no prolbem for daily driving.
When your 02j start breaking gears we have a gear set to help you out.
Save the issues run DSS 5.9 and they won't let you down.
Good luck

Re: Street legal 4th gen Jetta drag car
OP,
Why are you so hell bend on the car being street legal? Considering how much of the interior you've gutted it can't be what I would consider a "joy to drive."
I'm guessing you need to drive it to the track?
