Default My outlook on the sport compact drag racings future part 1.

To all my SC drag racing brethren. First off I would like to say we are all family in this from the racing promoters, grass root racer, parts manufacture, pro racer, fans/enthusiast, and future racers.
The things that I’m going to state are my personal outlook. Some of you may or may not agree.

As I walked SEMA show today talking to different parts manufactures having conversations about our sport I was taken back on what I was hearing. I was hearing things such as (sport compact drag racing is dead, the ____ series pulled out on you guys and____ collapsed you guys now you have no place to race, you guys should drift that’s were things are going now, drag racing is been there done that, so on and so fourth.

Make note of this:

Sport compact drag racing is not like platform shoes which are no longer are in style. SC drag racing is what we do and will not die. Also the time has come TODAY for the SC drag racer participants to stop paying for the sins for the failed efforts of past racing series. That’s over!!!! At this point we need not to wait for something to happen but to come together as a pack to a make a attempt to make things happen minus all of the BS,S**T talking, and everyone’s personal difference with each other. I know there’s a lot of that out there. Let’s get the juices flowing on here. We can rise above what is currently going on in our industry.

((This is the beginning of the “Law of the Wolves”)) by Rudyard Kipling.
NOW this is the law of the jungle, as old and as true as the sky,
And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the wolf that shall break it must die.

As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk, the law runneth forward and back;
For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

Unity 101

I heard differently. Sport Compact product lines have been the only ones that have not been severly affected by the economic changes. It hasnt been record breaking sales, but its been steady and not dropped off like other markets.

Agree, think about the demographics. Young 20 something, in a lot of cases, no long term payments, no wife, no kids, lots have a steady job with reasonable income. More young 20 somethings coming along the way everyday.

I think one of the goals for BOTI is to make sure the media focus's on SC Drag Racing. I trust they will do that.

I think we all have a new reason to be optmistic. Election is over and the country can now begin to move forward.

i think you are forgetting alot of the other half of the "demographic" you choose to point out.

20 something - no life, no dedication, alcohol, girls/sex, drugs, rock and roll ! growin pains, learning to live.

people in the genra, eventuallty grow out of the "fad" they were so hard about just a month or a year earlier.

edit - forgot the girlies

I'm with Dave. I think he hit the nail on the head with his take on things.

With that said, it leaves the situation up to those who still care, and have the drive and dedication to keep going. Small businesses are the one's who are going tosave this industry, if they choose and if they really want it.

I did not mention anything in my statement in regard to sales or demographics.I think I have a really good understanding about those kinds of things givin my professional background .Im talking about unity here!!!!As far as BOTI I think the first thing they should do is return emails and phone calls. You never know who might be able to help out with lifting our beloved sport back up.

BOTI hasn't gone anywhere, they have been here the whole time. Also IDRC.. small as they are now are still here.. CMI has also been here for YEARS and is still here.... IFO.... there is and was more than NOPI and NHRA for years.. people were just blind to it!!!

as far as i'm concerned i'm kind of glad that NHRA and NOPI are gone....

Those were weak anyway..... Trying to be something its not... i'm glad this is back to somewhat grassroots.. people were starting to get carried away thinking they are John Force or something..lol..

just my opinion....

whats wrong with it now? just want some actual feedback about what the actual problem is with sport compact drag racing as it stands today...

i still have had a pretty good amount of races to attend this year. with BOTI, CMI had a LOT of events, IFO, plus i saw some east coast events, Import wars or something like that, (sorry if thats not the correct name). etc..

You are from California? did you not have anything to attend this year?

sorry for all the questions just not sure what you are talking about?

This is a great topic and one that could be debated for years. Unfortunately I have been around long enough to watch 5 different Import / Sport Compact series fail in my 18 years of racing. Yes, I am 40 now and that cant believe it has been that long! BUT ... every one of these failed series had a common thread. They tried to turn it into something that it is not. All the thinking was to base events around "Pro" classes just like PowerADE. Unfortunately the demographics could not and would not support such a series. Import racing is firmly grounded in the grass roots guys that use spare coin in the pursuit of speed in a "non-conventional" platform. Each one of these failed series got so caught up in this mindset that it forgot the masses that included the sportsman racer. No Sportsmen and their buddies, NO SERIES. It also allowed manufacturers with big money to come in, dominate and run out any of the smaller guys that were working out of their garage. It turned all the "Pro" classes into an unattainable or reasonable goal. What I mean by that is to run 9.50's in an All Motor car it would take about 100k to get there. I don’t know many 18-25 year olds that could afford such an undertaking, heck these kids don’t even own homes yet! No Full fields, NO SERIES. They also ran off the magazines which as everyone can see now is the kiss of death ... No Coverage, NO SERIES.

Now, not all is gloom and doom. BOTI has stuck true to its grass roots and that is why they are still around. I know they are planning to improve the show for 2009 and make it a nice Import series for folks all around the country. From what I hear form Frank is that it will be based on quality of events rather thank quantity and it will include expanded media. (magazine, internet, TV). It will also strive to keep the grass roots racer involved and give them the best place to showcase their platform. So what WE need to do as a community is to participate when it comes to town and IF you have the means to travel do so and show your support. That is the only way we can grow this sport and create excitement to keep marketing partners interested.

Just one guys thoughts ...

Scott, I know you have participated in some lucas oil divisional events. I have been wanting to get your feedback on our "type" of cars and those events. And why do you not make it a steady habit at competing in that series?

I am growing up in the domestics, and what I see is it is not so much the 4 cylinder thing, but its the import thing. There are many competitive 4 cylinders, I mean record holders running 4 cylinders in stock/superstock. What i notice is its the make of the vehicle that sets us apart, not the size of the motor. I just wanted to see what Scott had to say about running in the series.

I think attitudes set us apart more than anything, for the worse.

Not on a personal level in regards to us racers, but the demographic.

i can agree. its not that i dont get respected as a person, but treated as the guy with the "import" car...

i know alot guys that run series all over, and get along with them very well, some old some young, but no matter how fast your car is, or records it sets in your particular class in a sc series, you try and go to a lucas or summit series race, you aint getting no love no matter how many people you know... thats the difference.

attitude is something that wont change overnight, and everyone i know that runs those series aint liking the idea of a merger with comp. maybe a few people have cars like hart and some modified cars but they still dont see the fact that the majority will not welcome you. like i said its my personal opinion but its the truth

redboost,

I have competed at a few BUT the problem is this ... There is no place for an All Motor car to compete ... All of the Super Stock Classes DO NOT allow 1 piece front ends and the Competition Eliminator classes are based around rear drive applications.

That is correct, 11.5 lbs per inch, N/A, tube chassis, front wheel drive, methanol only, NO TOW VEHICLES ... it will fall under the SS/MX heading and the class will be SS/EX. It will have a 10.20 index and will be a dial-in class WITH a breakout. So basically our "PRO" cars just got bracket-ed ... lol

I will have to weigh 1820 with my current set up. As will all my current fellow competitors.

yes that is it EX. Remember, it is not bracket racing...it is index racing, haha. I can't tell you how many times i have heard that. It is all the same, you gotta put a time on the window and, in most division, cut a light <.040, be within .050 of your dial-in and still have a 30% chance of winning. It is a blast to watch if one can follow all the index rules and know what is going on though.
