Individual Combustion Chamber Mapping
Is there anyone in the industry that does individual combustion chamber mapping?
We want to start providing these services and wanted to talk to tuners who are doing this sort of thing.
Thanks.

Are you talking about individual maps for fuel/ignition or combustion chamber pressure mapping?

Re: Individual Combustion Chamber Mapping (d@ve.G)
Well basically we use special modified spark plugs that can measure the pressure in the cylinders. Will be used for precise knock detection and allows us to measure peak pressures and also precisely detect misfires.

I think so far only NASA, Formula 1 and aircrafts use it for data aquisition. We want to actually use it for unleashing the maximum potential of the engine.

Re: Individual Combustion Chamber Mapping (int3gra)
This has also been done by Super Flow as part of a (I believe it was th 5100 series) high-end dyno set-up, so it was used by a number of people. One of the problems is holding any accuracy over the range of 12.5 - 1500 psi. The spark plugs with the tubes tend to introduce their own harmonics as well. The best set-up is to machine an engine block for the surface mount sensors, this removes the tube but now your sensor isn't in the greatest spot. Once your data is reliable you need to figure out how to interpret it. You'll need lots of time and money for this part. Check SAE for papers on the subject.

Re: Individual Combustion Chamber Mapping (Beyond_Redline)
We are palnning on running a sensor taped in the side of the head...it will work even better then a sparkplug. I have seen this done on motorcycles...
I know Ben Strader of http://www.efi101.com has this unit and will be using it in his classes.

Is this with duct tape or electrical tape?

Re: Individual Combustion Chamber Mapping (BigMoose)
we were looking at kistler but are checking some other companies as well.
Interesting to note about the spark plug harmonics Beyond_Redline, thanks We would be creating our own software for this of course.
We dont really want to machine the blocks, need something plug and play.

Re: Individual Combustion Chamber Mapping (int3gra)
I dont know if you guys know, but we manufacture map sensors and they have been a success in our region so now we want to move on to something more challenging. We made significant improvements on the sensors offered in the industry, more details will be up once I get the site updated, it crashed last week

Take a look at yokogawa. The piezo washer technology has been around by a couple of manufacturers for a few years. I am interested in what kind of frequency response someone really got from these in a real world situation. If you have run them I would be interested in what you found.

I had been kicking this idea/implementation around for about 2 years now, but Ford beat me to it:

for the future of knock detection and tuning tools. Keep at it man, it may not be affordable for most in this industry right now but someday it will and hopefully yall are at the forefront.
