GT42 spool time...
The missus bought herself a GT42R dual-ball bearing for her 2.9l VR6 drag Volkswagen drag car two years back and lost her car in a freak accident. Since then, the turbo's been sitting in its box. My drag Honda uses a T66, and lately, has developed a bit of play. So I'm thinking of transplanting the monstrosity in the CRX. My goal is touch 800whp, (at the moment I'm hitting 600whp on 30pounds of boost at 7,700rpm).
Engine:
B18B short block
Darton Sleeved
Wiseco/Crower with a 9:1 comp
Fluidampr
Turbonetics T66 / .58 exhaust housing (not any more lol)
Front mount cooler
Vtec head, slight port
S2 Pro1's
72mm throttle
Victor-X intake
MSD coils
Locally produced management
OEM tranny / DSS axles
26" M/T (upgrading to 28" if .42 works)
Problem is, at 6000ft above sea level, I'm worried about spool time, especially for an 1800? - I know some forum users here reckon the .42 is old technology, but hey, it's packed in the box and it's not doing anything. It's not even paying the rent!!! Should I use it, or sell it?
** I've tried searching for a .42 topic but no body here seems to enjoy the .42, except Tony Palo that is.

I have a turbo close to your .42, a GT4088. Everyone dogged it. Then I went ahead and used it. Best turbo I have used ever. ATP .82 Turbine housing with the .72 Comp. I realize this is a different turbo and a little smaller. But I DO NOT have as built as an engine as you have and having great luck with mine.

spool time will be dictated by how big the turbine housing a/r is and also your compression. If it is a track car only then spool time shouldn't make much of a difference unless it's spoolin after 7k rpm. I say put it on the car and if you don't like the spool time you can always either change the turbine housing to a smaller a/r or you can raise the compression on the engine to get it to spool sooner.

Thanks for the input. Just checked the exhaust housing, and its a massive 1.28, guess i might have to go smaller there.

I have a 83mm 9.5 to 1 compression ls/vtec using a GT4294 journal bearing. Also has top mount and pro1 cams, but as soon as it crossed into vtec at 6000 it would instantly go full boost which is 24psi and made 721whp. I have the 1.0 A/R exhaust housing. So shifting at 9500 gives me a 3500rpm power band. Not bad for a big journal bearing turbo.

You guys are the devil. I also have a Callos front piece which gives me enough space to make it front mounted piece, thus enabling me to create a port in front. Just need to fabricate a mean, firing-order manifold. I'm also quite happy to keep the front mount cooler, although I am tempted to go the charge route. I'll keep everyone updated on the progress.

You have 30psi @ 7,700rpm or redline is 7,700rpm?
We run the 4202 w/ 1.44a/r turbine housing on our H22. Spools like a champ! Spool obviously changes with time and load, but we usually have 30psi @ about 6k.

@andy: Power is at 7,700rpm, redline is 9,000. Ideally, raising the limiter to 9,500 will probably be a necessity with the GT42, although I'm not too happy that, because the last time we did it ran bearings. I'm not sure why till this day either. We are using a modded oem vtec oil pump though (don't laugh), so I might have to upgrade to something more capable of handling higher revs. @A1320, thanks for the info, 9,500rpm is epic, but what would be advisable to safe guard when it comes to revving so high. Sorry, but I'm totally clueless to anything over and above 9,000...lol!
Our first step though will be manifold fabrication, and I'm thinking of going with shorter runners to help with spool-up. I would love to go for longer ones though, but I'm a bit hesitant with that idea. I'd also need to source two "hectic" wastegates for the job...wish me luck boys...

I have got a t3t4 50a/r 63hotside turbo i think its a ebay turbo but it's going strong (a few years).
