4130 paint question...
Well, I finally finished up the cage and even went as far as molding the 6x6 plates to the floor to satisfy my OCD-like tendencies
I began priming my interior this weekend and noticed that the primer is not biting into the 4130 well. The surfaces are clean, and roughed up plenty. Have any of you experienced this before? MUST I use a self-etching primer for this crap? For anyone who's used 4130 and know the deal, please, chime in! Thanks.

use zinc chromate primer. its a self etching primer that works good for bare metal materials. l
like the other post state. scuff it down with a red scuff pad, the use PREP-SOL(which us a wax and grease remover) then spray on the zinc chromate primer.
And if you are OCD. then go one step further and scuff the zinc chromate with a grey scuff pad and then spray the self etching primer. then scuff that again and then spray your base color.

Re: 4130 paint question... (BoogieDownBrown)
Thanks guys... I just looked at it more carefully and it looks like the area may have been contaminated with some oil from my hands. I tried chipping at it and scratching it in other areas and it bonded very well.
I have some Dupont self-etching primer, so I may just switch to that for the cage like you guys have suggested. Thanks for the input!

Boogie, where are you getting your zinc chromate primer? I love it! My PPG jobber said it was taken off the market a few years back by PPG. I would sure like to find a new source for the best steel primer there ever was...

We normally get all of our supplies from a company called NYQUIST(I'm in Maryland). They are our PPG jobber actually. You can get non PPG stuff and it works just as good.I will double check to make sure what the name of the stuff/name brand it is.

Thanks Boogie... if it is another vendor, please post or drop me an IM. The jobber talked of the new heavy metal EPA regs canning the zinc chromate... if there is another source, I'll be on it with your lead!

Re: 4130 paint question... (HybridKOOP)
I just spent all weekend painting my new 10 point cage. I sanded it down lightly then wiped it over and over again with laquor(sp) thinner till my rage was perfectly clean. I then painted it silver but did not like the color so sprayed it blue looks much nicer now.
