What does OHMs mean on Subwoofers?
I have been looking at the alpine type R subs and some have dual 2 ohm and 4 ohm. What does all this mean and what is better to get? I have a rockford 600a4 amp 300 watts rms x 2.
Thanks,
JAson

The impedance of the speaker's coil(s) is measured in ohms. You can look at it as a resistance or load for the amp, which units are also called ohms. There is a variety of DVC subwoofers using 2, 4, 8ohms and even odd numbers just to create different combinations of loads to match the appropiate inpedance where the amps can work more efficiently. This combinations are used in multi-subwoofer systems and the wiring can be done in parallel, series or combination of both.
When you have a sub with dual 2ohms coils, you can wire in series the coils to create a 4ohm load. Wire them in parallel and you get a 1ohm load. The same applies to a sub with dual 4ohm coils. In series create a 8ohm load and in parallel it create a 2ohm. You look for this combinations when you use one subwoofer or more than three subwoofers to connect them to an amp that is 4ohm, 2ohm, 1ohm, and even 0.53 ohm stable. So, the combination depends on your amps and this indicate which amp you need to purchase or viceverza.

Please read this site. I learned a lot from it even being that I have worked in audio/video for 5 years+.
