I don't know much about mobile A/V, but I want a double DIN unit.
I just bought an 03 Suburban to haul kids and race cars. The stock GM 6 disc changer eats CDs. It has steering wheel controls and an OEM rear entertainment system with the Bose speakers.
I have a wish list of things I want and I have been searching for weeks on the internetz trying to find what will fit my needs and whatnot, but I am befuddled with everything out there.
Can you guys point me in the right direction? Maybe a couple suggestions of head units that will fit (most) of my needs.
My need list:
Retain steering wheel controls (I know that have those modules that do that, but I want a head unit that keeps the majority of the functionality)
Bluetooth - I know most everything these days has is, but I have no qualms with running an external mic so that it will work worth a damn (I had to do this with my Sony head units in my other cars)
Rear Camera Interface - This thing is huge and I am going to back into cars, toys, and people. Plus it will help with lining up the trailer.
Work with existing OEM Rear entertainment system. - I would like to be able to still use the OEM speakers to play the sound for the rear entertainment. Is it possible to see the video from the RSE? It probably just sends the audio to the head unit.
My wish list:
Interface with my Android phone - It would be cool if it could get Pandora, Slacker, etc from it. I am sure with Bluetooth interface I could at least stream Bluetooth Audio.
GPS - That would be pimp. Especially if it used the phones data connection.
Something simple to use - My wife is women and ...... Well, you know.
I appreciate the help.
Thanks
Burke

Re: I don't know **** about ****, but I want a double DIN unit.
I would start looking at Crutchfield.com. The nice thing about their site is that you can enter your criteria, checklist-style, and the site will narrow the choices for you, based on your selections, and also tell you what accessories you'll need to make it work. Then, take the parts info, and google the cheapest price.
Off the top of my head, I'm guessing there's at least one Pioneer double-DIN unit that will do what you want, and probably a few others as well. For steering wheel control, there's usually an adapter box that needs to be wired in, and while I'm not 100% certain about compatibility with the the OEM RSE, I'm sure there are a few decks out there that will do the job.

Pioneer 1st choice, Kenwood second. Check out pac-audio.com for harnesses to interface with OEM Bose amplifier (required, few options depending on if you have onstar), steering wheel control interface. Check out metraonline.com for install kits, Metra is the best for dashkits.
Can never go wrong with a Pioneer AVIC series...no AVIC- D series though!
