Default has anyone ever mounted a head unit in the glove box?

I have heard that even a removable face plate wont stop a car thief in NYC, so i was thinking of hiding the stereo entirely. so, I was considering cutting out the back part of the glove box just enough to allow my old sony head unit to fit, and re-routing all the necessary wires to there. Has anyone ever heard of or even attempted to do such a thing? I dont know too much about car audio, so what am I getting myself into here? is there a better place to hide the stereo?

The only problem with relocating the radio is the anntena. Other then that just extend your wires and you could move it under your seat if you want.

Why is that a problem? I'm sure you can buy an wire antenna extension.

it doesnt seem like that bad of an idea. but changing cds will be a bitch.

and songs too if you dont have a remote. and if you just leave the box open while driving, every bump you hit will bounce it.

i would try a diff place (i cant think of any)

they make antenna extensions.. or you could alway just order a longer antenna cable.

i have an IR remote, I suppose I could leave the door open and work with that, or get an IR repeater. As for disk changing, i usually use MP3 cds anyway, i dont know if that will be a problem.

I could probably put gauges (oil temp, pressure, etc) where the stereo normally goes.

I mounted a HU in the glove box before and never again. The guy was stubborn about having the HU hidden and he had to have it in the glove box, he would not listen to me. So I releuctantly did it after trying to talk him out of it. The worse part was that he later had the nerve to complain and say it was too much work to change the cd. So go figure.

so what was so bad about it aside from difficulty changing disks? I usually listen to NPR (one station) and when i listen to music, its MP3 disks.

you could always mount it under the seat..
then if someone were to look in the car with intentions of stealing your radio, they wouldnt see it and it would be hidden just as well if it were in the glovebox. .

The biggest problem in mounting it in a glove box is the angle the CD players sits at, it will be well over the manufacturers recommendations, skipping becomes a problem, unless you cut out the back of glove box and mount unit horizontally, it will be mounted to the dash not the glove box, the glove box will still open and close.
This only works on some Honda/Acuras, remove glove box and check for depth.
You will learn to hate it, I have done a few for customers who "insisted" and had them come back and have it moved to the stock location.
Have you thought about a "stealth" install in the stock location.
Custom mount unit back a 1/2" and use the OEM radio face as a "dummy plate". 94
