Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
Yes, I am thinking that is my problem. I will open it up tomorrow and see. I am willing to replace it as a ditch effort to get her to run. After all the tensioner is responsible for stopping the belt not jumping. Thank you for your suggestion.
Ps: pray my valves are okay

Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
Got the motor running. I am trying find why it is loosing so much coolant.
Does anyone have any experience with 7th gens? It doesn't smoke but it looses a lot quickly and the fans don't turn on but they work when tested. The ac and heater work also temp reads normal.
New head gasket, water pump, hoses thermostat. Loses the same amount of coolant as my last motor.
I'm stumped.
Any ideas??
Please and thank you

Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
Thank you!
I was able to borrow a snap-on coolant system pressure test tool from my uncle. This morning I put in a few minutes and did the test. My results were not what I wanted; quickly loosing pressure in about 3o seconds. I also started up the car to see white smoke that did not smell like coolant but I had not seen this before.
Other symptoms; coolant level when down as a revved the motor few bubbles while in idle. fans do not work, heat works no coolant on the ground or sub frame.
I am thinking bad head gasket? what do you think?

Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
great start bro. I love these cars, they make perfect DD, fun and reliable. but as far as a actual performance car, they are the worst, worst suspension of the hondas and etc. I had a 03 civic EX, that i used as my daily for like 4 years with no issues, great car, i loved. They def weren't built with performance in mind. If you want a more serious performance wise care with potential, similar-ish go with a rsx and use this strictly as a daily.

Thank you for the opinion SlowDB. on that note I am going to resurface the head and replace the head gasket again.
Lethaleg, I also really like these and I agree about the performance part. The car is currently my project car because I just bought an EG to get me around.

My plan for is to actually get another car. In search of dc5 through IAA for part out. Looking for motor, swap parts, seats and the brakes. Looking to sell my D17 motor to help make up the cost. Also interested in buying swap not in a car.

Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
Hey guys I did another pressure test on my coolant system and got a good result. I am pursuing a air bubble in the block. I have tried normal burping techniques but no luck yet. has this happened to any other D17 users?
Also working on restoring the shift cable assembly on the trans its turning out cool ill post some pictures soon.

New d17a from Hmo with 40k to replace the old one. I am really excited to drive the car again runs strong I just have a few things to button up. anyways here are the pictures I collected during the process.
I made a gnarly clear combo to clean up the bolts
pulled the old swap out
I wish I would have painted the new motor like I did with this one.
simple green everything

Put that **** back together
also always keep your clutch tool in a safe place!***
some of the new parts
Picked up some old NT-03 Enkie wheels 17s still look small. Plan is to get some meaty tires on them for race car look.
washed

no picture back on the car but it looks like this

I have put a hundred miles on it so car. it looses a little coolant and has a slight oil leek that I have found. I hope to have the car all the way done soon. Where did you get your d17 from?

Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
Nice build man. Always happy to see another EM2 owner (yours is in way better shape than mine lol).
Two suggestions about the coolant leak:
a) When I changed my headgasket because it was on it's way out (you could tell because after driving for a while, if you open the cap to the radiator exhaust gas would be coming out ) I actually put the head gasket on wrong/backwards. It's hard to tell, but on the OEM one there is a small triangle shaped tab that lines up with an equal shaped tab on the block. Maybe it's not sitting right so coolant is escaping there?
b) these blocks aren't so bad that both motors should be leaking coolant already (especially the one with 40k). Maybe it's part of the coolant system that you haven't replaced like the heater core or the radiator?
TL:DR- Check headgasket direction, heater core, and radiator
Good Luck!

I kept filling the new one up it needed less than a cup each time and has stayed full for about 200 miles.
I did however fry a wheel bearing on my front passenger hub. Im going to replace both front wheel bearings with parts I ordered from honda when I get back from camping

Re: Logan's 7th gen civic
i've never had any coolant loss issues in my EM2. I would just bypass the rad and heater core, then pressure test the engine alone. if it passes, test rad, then heater core independently with the pressure tester. that should at least narrow down the scope of the problem. good luck with your beautiful ride.
BTW, i just did front wheel bearings on mine, just be equipped with a big hammer and blocks of wood to pound out the old stuff. i used a press to get it back in, that was the easy part, but there is no way to get it in a press to press out the old ones. hammer is the only way.
