why are you soo surprized you have a 93 1.8lt gsr motor? the jdm market got the dc2 gsr or sir-g or whatever first in 1993 not 1994 like the U.S! and what really matters is the rest of the stamp. a 93 with a 08-09-10-11-12 is actually a 94 anyway. remember if you buy a car in 1993 september for example its stated a 94 model but the engine will have still be stamped 93.
and I agree with the others.
1)the switch over should be rather smooth then bang, pop LOL!
2)get the car on a dyno to see your numbers in order to evaluate if something infact is wrong. no one is telling you to get it tuned!

check timing.
I've had the same problem as you when i first bought my gsr. My bro had a 94 gsr back in the day, and i remember driving it. Vtec hit at like 4500( started to pull) but at 5500 it would start to pull hard, then butterflies open up 5800(as loud as vtec) and the car would pull harder.
well his gsr only had 90k on it at the time and the tbelt and water pump was replaced right before he bought it.
I recently bought a 94 gsr for a daily and had your same problem. i'd hear vtec hit as a gsr would at 4500 rpm, then it would lag and bog down at 5000 till about 5800 rpm then it'd slowly pick up(felt like butterflies not opening up). Thought it was the butterflies not working, checked all the vacums to it, it was fine. so i thought might was well throw a timing light at it. I turned the distributor all the way to the advance position and the ignition timing was still like 5 degrees off.
with the distributor fully advanced, the car felt more lively and felt like gsr, where before it felt like a b16 not in vtec. I changed the timing belt and water pump out, compared the belts and the old one was a little bigger(meaning streched out)
if you havent done the tbelt, i suggest it.
