Motor won't fire
Just put in a 98 Ls into my hatch. It previously had a 94 Ls so all the wiring and ecu weren't changed out. Dropped motor and hooked everything up. Car wouldn't start. Just turned over. Checked for spark and was getting spark. Moved dizzy to try to adjust timing. Car finally started and then died. Started one more time then died. Now no spark and no fuel pump turning on. Had fuel pressure and replaced cap and rotor. Can anyone help? I've read it might be main relay, coils, ecu or a ground. Anyone have any other ideas. Can timing be off so much where it won't give spark??

Forgot to mention that I swapped all parts over from the 94. Which includes the dizzy. After reading some, I think this may be the issue since its all obd1 wiring and the head requires obd2. Anyone have any input?

Which ecu are u using obd1 or obd2?
If ur usin obd2 ecu on obd1 dizzy and injectors plugs probably wouldn't work but don't quote me on that.
If u installed the obd1 dizzy and injectors I would use ur obd1 ecu if u have one from ur old motor.

Oh never just saw where u didn't change out ecu.
Mayb check ur timin. Take ur spark plug out on cylinder 1 and put a stick in and rotate ur crank till the stick doesn't go any further, check ur crank timin mark and ur cam timing mark, and take off ur distributor cap and check if the coil is pointed to cylinder 1.

I got the fuel pump to turn back on. Main relay was friend. Going to check if I'm getting power at the dizzy plugs tonight. If there's power, I'm thinking its the coil pack. If not then maybe a fuse or something along the way.

Timing is a little off. Crankshaft pulley and cams are not pointing straight up when the engine is at TDC. When I put the pulley and cams where they are supposed to be, #1 is not TDC and Rotor in the dizzy is pointed between 1 and 3. Would this be the issue? Also, the gas is about 8 months old haha.

Re: Motor won't fire
Yep ur timing is off. Retime it and if u got spark and fuel pressure it should start.
I just recently dropped in a stroker b18c1 in my hatch and I know the timing is hard to do with one person. I had my wife hold the cam gears with two ratchet on each at top dead center, while I lined up the mark for the crank pulley, loosen the tensioner and pulled the timing belt on the gears while my wife was holding the gears steady.
Love my wife she helped build my motor lol

Heading to work on it after work. Got two hours to go. Gotta love when the wife helps! My fiancé stripped the paint out of my bay and swapped parts from my old LS to my new one.

Re: Motor won't fire
oh yea don't forget to retime ur distributor too.
And plug wire Firing order should b
Distributor plug wire sequence
3-4 (top plug wire sequence)
1-2 (bottom plug wire sequence)

Compression test. #1: 145. #2: 60. #3: 120. #4: 120. Have fuel pressure. Getting spark. Have ground from thermostat housing to body. Even tried a new ecu. Spark was a little orange. CEL only have me one flash.

Re: Motor won't fire
I think my timing might be off still. I have a feeling my buddy that did the timing put the pulley on and lined up the pink line for TDC instead of the white. Could this cause this much of a problem?

Re: Motor won't fire
Best way to time the crank is pull spark plug one out and find a long stick and stick down to the cylinder. Then use a rachet and turn the crank pulley counter clockwise till the stick goes all the way up and doesn't go up no more. U should b at tdc. Timing mark should b the white mark ( the only mark on the crank pulley that's further away from the other marks). Check again once u have the cylinder tdc, then check cam gears if the up mark is pointed up, and also there is a mark on the cam gear teeth where they should line up parallel to each other. Then pull distrubitor cap off and check if the coil is pointed at cylinder plug one. If not pull off distrubitor and point it to cylinder plug one.

Re: Motor won't fire
All timing is lined up. Firing order is correct. Only starts when I advance it a couple inches. Could it be bad rings or head gasket?

Re: Motor won't fire
My buddy is saying the rings are shot. Compression goes up with a little bit of oil placed in the cylinder. Guess I have to find a b20 block now.
