Nah, I totally get where the ref was coming from on that. With all of the ecu flash stuff that's come along in the last decade and change, it's impossible for them to police it all. I think it's dumb and I disagree with it, but I understand why it is that way. It's outlined in his list of things that he has to get checked off that it's something that needs to be done. So it's quite literally nothing more than him doing his job, not something he made up personally.
One has to remember the whole time with this process... no one is paying me to put this engine in this car, and, no one told me to swap the engine. It really benefits no one except me to have it in there and running in a configuration other than the way it came from the factory. So really the fact that they even offer this as a service is just a favor from the state to a very tiny minority of people.

A favor from the state, now you're just being comical. Congrats on making it this far but seriously the amount of time and money the ref has cost you should never have been an issue. They are the ones that are supposed to verify everything is correct. I don't understand what is so hard about the ref looking up the information himself.

Well either way, that chapter is finished. Just got off the phone, my in-person (hopefully final) appointment is scheduled for 4-20 in DTLA.
Can’t wait to come home and put all my fun parts back on - lol.

She's street legal! That only took a year, not including the year of work and wiring leading up to the actual process....

Thanks.
He noticed the head casting early on, and said it was wrong but he'd let it slide. He said he'd add it to the label in case I ever got a smog guy "who's really good at his job" lol.

So, I had to fudge things a little to get it by. Maybe I'll point out what I did at some time in the future. Maybe not.
The fun part, I actually ended up with a sniff since they tailpipe all engine changes, even if they don't need it my year (>1999):
HC's are high compared to average but well within range but HC's are whatevuh. CO is right where it should be. The nasty-*** NOx's are looking great. I'll take that as a win, this is a clean car, in this state of tune at least

Getting this thing back to fun mode, a little at a time. August/September have been full of work trips and vacations so I haven't had much time to do work.
Before next smog (next year):
- I need a DC Sports or Injen Short ram, one of these two will fit with the icebox and let me retain my 68mm throttle body. Both have a CARB EO number on them and will pass visual. My heat wrapped Amazon special short ram will have to go.
- Might do a Skunk2 manifold, if I can find one. I waffled on them a couple months ago and now they are out of stock everywhere. I've been staring at this P2T manifold for years waiting to have access to the facilities I need to mod it to fit the head, but doing that will make smogging a hassle. The Skunk2 307-05-0280 Pro series manifold is less ideal but I can just point at a CARB EO number and get on with my day.
- Chop the 2" flange off of my legal cat and shorten it/replace with the 2.5" flange so it fits the ITR header.
Hopefully this weekend:
- Reinstall my injectors and fuel rail setup
- Get my new cams from Rocket installed and degreed in:

Re: Mild B20z non-vtec daily driver build... looking for input.
Decided to dust off the COP parts and move to execution. Drove around for a couple of days with my spare distributor installed before I cleaned it up and disassembled with the intention of gutting the coil and ignitor wiring, leaving nothing but the mag sensors:
Safe to say the 20 year old seal was rightly dried out and ready to be replaced.
Unfortunately the wiring insulation is in pretty bad shape so the MO moved to disturbing it as little as possible. This is the third distributor I've opened up and found like this. I need to keep hunting for a clean set of sensors/loom or find something aftermarket. We'll see if it works in the meantime.
Cleaned up the shaft and reassembled with a new seal & O-ring. The bearing is nice and smooth still. Capped off the hot wires and ICM wire with some shrink and reassembled.
On to the rest this week.

Not too much. Just enjoying it right now.
I have a Skunk2 manifold to install and need to pick up an Injen short ram for it before I smog this summer. Both parts have CARB EO numbers, and the intake will work with my Comptech airbox.

Re: Mild B20z non-vtec daily driver build... looking for input.
Maybe I did have a couple of updates after all...
Finally found and fixed my slowly worsening fuel trim issue. I’ve been trying to diagnose some weird stuff for a while and discovered my pump is only seeing ~10V now. It was ~12.5V when I first installed this pump, which I deemed less than ideal but not awful.
It’s fun trying to keep an old car from dying, isn’t it? 👍🏻
Not much to see on the install, I fished the power wire through the factory conduit along the driver's side floor and over to the pump then ran the ground back along the same rout to OE ground point just aft of the trunk release lever on the driver's seat rail mount. Then loomed it all up with mesh to add some abrasion resistance and pinned the pump connector in place.
Brown connector goes to the B+ connector in the under-dash fuse panel. De-pinned the original fuel pump wire from the floor harness connector and into a new connector, that connects to the grey connector here for the trigger. No one cut or splice was made to the factory wiring. I need a better crimper for 12awg+ wires.
Even with full voltage finally making it to the pump, the old DW200 was getting pretty loud and I was still having issues with high pressures. The AEM pump is almost 4x larger than I'll ever need, but they make really good pumps and the green ones in particular are 100% ethanol friendly.
And finished my COP install...
Finally, made some breakouts to access the extra sensor connectors I built into the engine loom. Having the fuel pressure sensor hooked up would have made it a lot easier to diagnose my pump and wiring issues sooner.
Still need to make the sensor end extension. Hope to have some time when I get back from Daytona.
