Carburated B18b? Strap a 4bbl Holley on the B*tch!!!
I just finished an all motor b18b thats got the stock intake and crap on it.
I was thinking of going ITB's, but ended up selling my 954rr setup to a buddy of mine. So, i figured I'll just run an Edelbrock JG intake on it and that should be enough.
But then my sick mind started working and thought, what if I made an intake manifold that i could sit a holley carburator or edelbrock on, throwing the ecu in the garbage and rocking it muscle car style.
I mean, carbs have made v8 powa with amazing success... all im doing is cutting that motor in half.
Think this would work? Should i actually try to do this, getting an ignition and using the distributor like a crank trigger...would it work??? hummm

i believe Snowseeker here on HT is trying to run a downdraft on a gsr engine. i personally would suggest running some sidedraft carbs. peircemanifolds.com should have a mani to use. run some webers. much simpler than trying to make a 4bbl setup work IMO.

I agree side draft carbs are worth looking into, and yield great results.
Also I have seen a carburator like you speak of on a B16 motor back in the day and it was sick.

Man you're crazy... Those single plenum holley 800cfm carb would be very2 hard to tune for low RPM, i've some experience with them on my 6 slant AMC... it was extremelly rich at low rpm.
why dont you just use IR twin WEBER 48 or 50mm.

Re: (jt-sport)
I would look into some side drafts, but coming from a muscle car background, making a manifold and setting the holley/carter on it would be signifigantly easier for me to accomplish and tune.
I'm just looking for something different also. I'm not saying, "hey, im going to do this and make the most hp ever". I'd just like to try it for the sake of trying it and seeing if it has any benifit at all.
The other thing is, i'd probably scoop up a 390cfm holley. I run an 850 jetted out holley on a race car of mine that "could" be upwards of 800hp. (3200lb car, 10.20 @ 135mph) So i figure, cut that in half and the 390 would be pretty close to match this motor. ...man, im gettin itchier on this!!

Is this strictly on a drag car, or a daily driver? Carbs with ITB's on a Honda will certainly kill all the daily driving aspect of the car. I don't understand why people would use carbs on their fuel injected motor, especially when EFI is far more superior than carburators...

do this...find a good 4 cylinder that was carbd...ie...the old toyotas...22r or the old 1.8s....combine that manifold with an old b18b flange..then buy the apropriate weber carb for the yota mani. thatd be the easiest way to carb it i think....at least if you dont want side drafts and want an oldschool top mount style carb. my brother and i built a weber carbed 22r with **** from lc engineering who built christian rados toyota and it absolutely hualed ***...jsut thougth id throw that in there. imagine the throttle response and the sound when the second barrel opened up...

I never thought of the old weber 22r carb setup. That would be interesting.
It is true, carbs will make more power... its just a matter of if i can prove this or not. pshh, not
My car would be daily driven and a weekend racer. I dont think it would touch the driveability of the car what-so-ever. One of the biggest reasons why ITB's are not street friendly is b/c most people can't tune them worth a ****. A carburator is one of the easiest types of injection to tune. You have idle and mixture... boom, done. Don't you wish that all FI cars had a little screw that would adjust your a/f ratio! haha
I think im going to stick to the 390cfm holley idea...and i mean, this is just an idea. I like that people are inputing. Its not like im going to go out right away and try to do this. Probably more in the future than now.

you don't know dick about carbs, do you?
why woudl that runing the daily driver aspect? since NO factory cars EVER cam carb'd...or hondas either...right?

its only a matter of the configuration you want. and they make godo power up top from what i hear...i dont have a carbd b series so i dont wanna talk about it too much but it would be neat. theres a carbd single cammer in last months hondaa tuning.
itb tuning is a pain. i have a vr6 on grant itbs from europe on engine management that my brother and i made from some megasquirt **** and it took forever ot get it to run but....when it did...imagine the sound of a ferrari f40 on steroids. 3 short velocity stacks, and 3 long velcity stacks combine for a 6 cylinder harmonic effect..sort of like a trumpet and a french horn would.
do it and put a big round old school style filter on it while youre at it.

This is straight up bull ****. Commonly found on h-t when someone creates a carb topic.
Honestly, how many carb'd honda have you worked on? I dont mean stock 1986 prelude carbs either, but performance carbs. How many carb'd Hondas have you owned for that matter?

How about a Holley DP on a 1.5?... Purrs like a kitten:
This is a friend of mine's car. Now see what he has done:
Blow through low pressure turbo- still on the holley.
He has the parts laying around and enjoys trying new things. He has run a 14.3 with it on skinny street tires.
Now he is trying a Z6 head on the EW block!?!

Re: (Lekz)
No they get horrible gasmileage :D, what carbs are good for is that they have instantaneous response to the throttle because they're mechanical. Carb turbos are right next to the devil.

Re: (Flashmn)
So its all about throttle response? Why not just run ITBs? Seems like Carbs are dinosaur technology and the only reason to run them on a previous EFI motor would be just for pure shock value.

in last months honda tuning magazine, the crx thats on the cover was carburated. it was an old school single cam and he claims it makes over 200 whp. not to shappy for a single cam.

Re: Carburated B18b? Strap a 4bbl Holley on the B*tch!!!
1. Bad gas mileage = myth (based on the tune. even efi can yield bad gas mpg if thats how its tuned)
2. Dinosaur technology = myth. There are awesome modern performance carbs still being developed all the time. Do not compare a modern race carb to the stock carb on your grandpas datsun pick up.
3. constant tuning required = myth. Good linkage helps keep the carbs in sync. I live in southern california, with the weather being pretty decent all year long. Once properly jetted and sync'd, carbs are fairly low maintenance.
For those interested in some information regarding carbs read this article:
http://www.pro-system.com/scoop92102.html
pay attention to what is mentioned about emulsion, and the joule thompson effect.
FWIW: Many people know about the Hayabusa bikes that many folks drag race. Many of the turbo conversions remain EFI. Many of the naturally aspirated drag hayabusas are converted from EFI to carb with the use Lectron carburetors.

Re: (Black R)
Awesome! This is the kinda stuff i was hoping to get.
I'll have to find that honda tuning to see what info i can get from it. Thats an A20 motor that carb is on? VERY nice!
Even boost on carbs is good. There was a guy that was selling a kit with a paxton type blower that housed both carbs in a chamber so that it was entirely surrounded by the boost... very well engineered. It would take a normal 400-500hp big block chevy over 1200hp.
The fuel milage issue, you'll never get the gas milage from a carb that you will out of fuel injection. Wanna go fast? Some of the fastest street legal cars on the planet only run off 2 carbs
