Weird "moo-ing" noise towards back underneath of car after turning it off...
Lately, I've been noticing that after I shut off the car, I hear a "moo-ing" / buzzing noise somewhere underneath the car. Seems to start a few minutes after the car is turned off. It almost sounds like a kazoo, maybe 4 seconds in duration. I was washing my car tonight in my driveway, and I heard this at least 7-10 times, a few minutes apart. My wife thought I was crazy, so I lodged myself under the car and tried to locate the sound.
It sounds like it's near the fuel tank, just in front of the rear suspension. Is this the car's way of relieving pressure in the fuel tank? It's been pretty hot in Chicago, maybe 85-90 degress. When I had heard this sound before, I thought maybe something was wrong with the hydraulics in the hatch. But this time I opened the hatch. I'm thinking if I can replicate this again, I should put the car on jackstands and try to locate it again. My Spoon springs make it too low to fit underneath! Maybe I should try to record this sound with my laptop...
Any ideas???? thanx guys.

...and i thought i was the only one. I can testify to those sounds also. I've heard this on both my GSR and now with the Type R. It sounds almost like something is depressurizing or something. And not only right after you shut the car off, but i've encountered it hours later. I thought I was hearing things. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I try not to listen to my car or it would say things like:
"Tommy, what the fug are you doing? Go do something productive or you will be the first mental patient with an ITR."
"Have you seen the movie A Beautiful Mind? You're like him except your stupid. Cars can't talk you foo!"
Ok I'm bored

A fuel tank pressure sensor and a "purge device" are players in the strange noise game.

Hmm, I've always wondered what that noise was in my Si. Even with the battery disconnected it would do it. Now I kinda know.

My car makes the same noise. I had no idea what it was, and also suspected the hatch hydrolics. Sort of a moaning sigh that drops in pitch towards the end, and lasts a few seconds, and is a couple min apart.
Wil, can you explain more about what is happening?

'I think' that the charcoal canister is more complex on newer cars....
If you let the car sit in the sun and heat up the plastic gas tank will expand and contract (when it cools) the pressure is from the gas (and more important the gas fumes).
For emissions purposes the fumes in the gas tank are 'recycled' thru the charcoal canister from time to time to prevent the 'pshhhh' you sometimes hear when you open the gas cap.
Those fumes are pumped/purged/blasted back into the vapory recovery system and that is then the noise happens.
Older cars do not have this feature...
Notice that the gas cap says to make sure you click it 3 times or the CEL will come on...
fyi... XR4Racers 'black' 4-runner does the m00ing/farting noises a LOT... maybe due to the color.
