Default OT: Crime doesn't pay, but it lets me drive really cool cars....

Well I've had my eye on driving one of our "work" cars for some time. I was messing around inside of it the other day just checking things out when one of the chieft training agents saw me and said "hey somebody needs to take that thing out on a regular basis, keep the battery charged and whatever" . Today I grabbed the keys and took it out for a good run, gas, and wash (after getting the battery charged).

Oh yeah here it is (not actual car but looks just like it except for the wheels).




It's a 1987 911 Turbo. 285hp I believe (saw 300hp on some sites). Four speed manual. Ours is fitted with some RUF wheels wearing 275 rear tires with 245 wide fronts. Simpson race harnesses and a fire extinguisher. At least the crook new how to use it. Great shape inside and out.

Let me just say this is one of hardest cars I've ever driven, actually I'll say its the hardest by far. In some weird way it being a major pain in the butt made it even cooler.

1. Pedals WTF? The gas pedal is freaking hidden behind the center dash section on the floor. I had to literally point my toe to hit the gas without banging it on the middle dash area. Heel and toeing wasn't happening with my feet or at least not with my dress boots on. I tried (with the car sitting still) but my heel/side of foot just banged the dash every time.

The Clutch is dead center and got mistaken for the brakes a few times.

Oh and none of the other pedals were easy to use either (brake and clutch). If I lifted my foot off the floor to press them (like I do in my car) my toe would hit the dash. I had to leave my heel completely on the floor and just rotate my ankle. It felt VERY weird.

2. Steering. It sits about 4 inches from the dash and isn't adjustable AT ALL (not that I found at least). Sitting in my normal close driving position the wheel was stuck against my leg forcing me to sit back a littlle more than my liking.

3. Shifter. Long and notchy. Also when the car is in second gear the shifter actually touches the seat. I don't mean close. I mean touching.

4. Rest of the interior: Everything is just in a weird place period. I swear it has 5 different levers and switches for the AC system. I never figured it out. It has 3 sliders on the dash and then down on the floor is 2 more fan *****. Turning the "lights" on resulted in me popping the fuel door

5. Driving experience: Freaking awesome. The car was missing up high which kinda sucked though. I think it had low octane gas from idiots driving it. I put in some 93 octane and it seemed to get noticeably better. I believe it has an aftermarket exhaust as well. The car rasped and popped when you let off the throttle making it sound pretty mean.

The gears are long as crap, but the car had good torque and its just cool driving a 4 speed.

No power brakes (if they are its the hardest power brake pedal in the world) is kinda cool and weird. Car stopped really good for being that old.

Handling seemed great , but I didn't test it that hard. One thing I noticed though is the car dives in HARD when you lift throttle in a corner. I kept in mind the deadly snap oversteer, but it didn't feel like that. I felt really planted actually. Heck the car seemed to want to turn in hard under throttle as well.


Summary: The car is a pain to drive in most regards but this just makes it cooler IMO. It would be a challenge to learn to drive well which would be very rewarding once you accomplished it.


Oh and if anyone saw a red 911 Turbo stuck in a car wash this afternoon it was me....the car went dead on me and wouldn't crank (thankfully I had a portable starter with me)

I had a couple of those come through my work too. One of the most gangster cars ever made by porsche. The people who purchased those cars were suggested to take a training course to learn how to drive the car.

Kinda lol.

It's confiscated government property. We've just kept it around for a while. Nobody drives it on business or anything, we just run it every now and then to keep it up, battery charged, etc.

Now if we could just bust somebody with a McLaren....

when i worked for a dealer we had i believe an 86 turbo. i drove it (used salespeople drove all the cars to get a feel for them). i will concur that it was probably the most difficult car to operate smoothly of anything i've ever driven. big beefy clutch, long throws with vague feel, turbo that was either lagging or making full boost, brakes like a rock, heavy steering, odd controls compared to cars of today, etc. it's a true porsche.

it was great. the car is so user-unfriendly, it's driver friendly. meaning that only the experienced seasoned wheelman could possibly operate the vehicle.

Isn't it just cool as Hell when you find out our car is easy and fun to learn to drive?

Anyway, Ferdinand was an interesting guy none-the-less.

Exactly what I was trying to say. I would want one as a challenge. After I learned it well I'd let my friends try to drive it . When they started to complain and ask questions I'd act like I didn't know what they were talking about

1) Yes the pedals on these cars are kinda close and if you have monster feet it is a lil hard but nothing to fuss about...you get used to it really quick

2)I never found a prob with the steering on these bad boys

3)I agree the shifter sucks compared to what we have....its a long throw and it may be notchy cause of worn bushings...I believe their plastic

4)The leavers on the floor are for the heater which will warm up your feet while you drive. The ones on the dash are just for the a/c settings, and the **** on the center console is to turn the a/c on and off.....Did the a/c actually work??? These cars are notorious for bad a/c's....mostly because the dryer and other componts are in the front of the car and have a long freon line to the front. Its kinda hard to get some R12 freon these days unless you have a hook up

5)Yes that car does kick some ***. Must be nice....it probly is missing cause of the old gas...

My dad has a 85' 911 caborlet (sp). The nice part about my dads is that he has the 911 non turbo engine on a 930 chassis (turbo body) with the turbo brakes and everything....FROM Factory. Its a rare one. Funny part is we got it at a auction, where all the cars were consfiscaed from drug dealers and criminals.

Looks like lots of fun. Old cars always are a little harder to drive though

Its always fun to drive or get a ride in someone else's cool car. I'm hoping to get a chance to drive this guys ferrarri 360 modena Challenge Stradale the weekend of the Canadian Gran Prix as I'm watching the race at his house and he has already let my best friend drive the thing

I've driven a few 930 Turbo's and I must say that they are least user freindly sports car ever divised in recent decades. The 86 930 I drove was pretty sick, and I actually spun it out (no damage) it was my bosses car at the time

I later got to drive a 94 3.6 Turbo, which was absolutely sick, but not confidence inspiring at all, since anytime the tach went above 4K it felt like the car was gonna fishtail violently, and it would if you weren't totally prudent with the go pedal.

i worked at benz a few years ago an got to drive the same E55 '98 a few times an a C43. my brother took a ren tech sl600 out which was 1 of 3 reasons he got fired.he said i was stupid fast.the guy how owned it got bet by a 911 turbo when he first got it thats why he put like 150k in ren tech stuff on it. the guy is a Mellon like mellon bank.i had alot of fun rockin all the newest benzs. i love cruising in the summer.

Does anyone have any real world specs on them? I've seen a few specs on the internet, but not from trust worthy places.

285hp/315lb/ft (or whatever they have) and 2850lbs should be pretty quick. It sure felt decent for a car that was missing (felt a whole lot better after I filled it up with 93 octane but was stuck in traffic )

Found some respectable specs. US versions have 284hp with 284lb/ft torque. They weight a touch over 2,900lbs. 0-60 in the low to mid 5's with a top speed of 162mph.
