Default Looking for info on damaged valves

Well what had to happen, happen.

My camshafts and crankshaft decided to stop communicating with each other and now I have to change some bent valves. I have a few questions:

1- How much can I expect to pay for a full set of OEM valves and/or is there a good supplier beside the Acura dealer (preferably in Canada).

2- Is there anything else I should worry about and should check before I reinstall everything.

3- Is it imperative that I change my Spoon head gasket or can it be reused

4- Is there a good product on the market to clean/remove carbone buil-up around the valve seat.

Thank you for any information

I dont know much about this but you will want to check your head and pistons. Try doing a search if it works and there may be a lot of information you will find.

small bump to the top plus additionnal inquiry:

Is there a tolerance on the straightness of a valve. For my fisrt check I just put them in a manual drill and spin them at high rpm. Some were wobleling like a drunken frat girl and I know they are bent but other were giving up just a very slight vibration and I would like to know if they are still within spec.

Again thank you for any help

i would replace them regardless what your drill says.

if you want to stick with OEM valves then you have no choice then to get them at the dealer. or you may be able to find a set of used valves still in good shape.

other than that you do have aftermarket choices as well. Ferrea makes excellent stainless steel valves. Crower also makes stainless steel valves which are also pretty good.

good luck

I bought a set of new Type R valves off eBay a few weeks ago for $175, but they are taking forever to arrive so I just bought some new ones from the dealer. When they show up, I'd sell them for $175 + $10 shipping.

Just curious-stock timing belt?
Don't reuse the headgasket, you might get away with it, but why risk it?
Depending on how badly the valves were bent, you may want to have the guides checked.

$160 is actually fairly reasonable from the dealer. Not sure how the dude I bought them from gets away with selling the INT and EXH for only $15 more.

Thanks for all your replies

I guess I will add a head gasket to the list and open up a jar of Vaseline before I call the dealer.

Removing the center layer of an OEM head gasket will yield the same CR as a two ply Spoon gasket right?

MCP486: unfortunatly I don't think I can wait too long before ordering the valves. I am about to sell my second car (to be replace by a motorcycle) so I need to fixe the ITR this week.

just saw this today.

sorry to hear about this man.

In a perfect world, I'd replace the guides too but that would mean taking off the head and sending it to a local machine shop who knows how to install them (heat the head evenly without warping it and pressing in chilled new guides). Installed height checks are a must...in the Helms.

When the teeth inside my brand new stock timing belt shredded, I ordered the Toda belt from AKH. Dave at R&D and Mike at IPS didn't have them in stock at that time...they may now.

I know the feeling.

Toduh.

Anyway, I sent you an email. May see you in Toronto soon.

cheers

BTW those valve lapping compounds/paste aren't a good idea on the seats, since they imbed into the seat even after you wipe them off and can wear the valveface and seat faster. I'd stick to one of those fuel additive solvents to remove the carbon build up.
