Default What are the benefits of a Hondata?Or should i just get a chipped p28?

Hey guys...Im thinking of getting either a chipped p28 or a Hondata.Im not really trying to spend that much , but if getting a Hondata would benefit superbly without being way more expensive compared to a chipped ECU, then i think im gonna get a Hondata. What are the differences between the two? If i were to get a Hondata could i change the settings on the Ecu? How much am i looking at to get a Hondata and everything i would need to use it properly and safely?I dont know much about the electronics and would love to know more about it.Any help from you guys would be great.I am all motor and plan on stay ing that way.Not planning on going super HP, im planning on going autoX, and would like to have traction with power. Thanks guys.

Here's a good website to start your search from: http://www.hondata.com

You can also check out http://www.jdmhondaparts.com Off the top of my head, I know they do ECU reprogramming.

As far as the cost, I think it would depend on what kind of Hondata you chose.... as far as what stage. If you go the highest level, it will be very expensive. If you just get a stage 1 upgrade, it will be about the same amount as getting a chipped P28? Maybe anyway. The benefit to the Hondata would be that it is obviously more tunable than just a chipped P28. You will be able to change things such as fuel maps and ignition timing, etc. whenever you need to. It's more customizable, but at the same time more expensive. I like to use the old adage, "you get what you pay for" though. I don't have Hondata, but everything I have ever heard or read has been good.

There are no stages anymore. There's an S100 and an S200. If you don't have an OBDI GSR you'll hafta convert it to OBDI via a harness for either option. Hondata is a much much better solution because it allows your chip to be tailored for you car and mods. If you just get a P28 and get one of the "real" chips then even if you get a decent program(Skunk2 or Mugen) it won't be optimal for your car. It'll cost you more in gas than the tuned Hondata eventually, and the performance will almost certainly be lower. One size fits all chips are not very usefull.

Correction, they STILL have stages but they're newest and most advanced systems (s100 and s200) do not. More info on the hondata site.

LOL

Correction of your correction. Their site shows ONLY the s100 & s200 systems for sale. Now you can buy the base setup and add additional goodies later, but I do not believe you may still buy the seperate stages from Hondata. Perhaps on the used market, but bear in mind that I bought their "newest and most advanced" system(s200) for $259 about 6 months ago. The s100 is even cheaper. I'd definately not bother with the stages they used to sell.

Thats a Hondata modified P28 with obd2 plugs i believe. Thats not the hondata itself, just a regular obd1 p28 modified to fit an obd2 car without an obd2-obd1 conversion harness.

Right. The Hondata unit I received is a small blue box, fits in the glove compartment easily.

ok so then thats not a Hondata? So would it be worth getting?Should i just save up for a "real" Hondata? Im trying to get this all done in the coming week.So i cant really afford anything super expensive. If its a p28 Ecu with a Hondata chip or whatever, does it still perform like a Hondata? Does that mean its a tunable p28 , and wouldnt that be better than a p28 chipped with Mugen specs or whichever i chosse?I really want to get this done.I have a 97' GSR obd2, with a few mods, staying all-motor, so whichever you guys think work best. And i do like quality and reliability, so i guess whatever help u guys can give...thanx!

What I believe you're seeing is a P28 chipped for Hondata chipped by Hondata. The ECU change doesn't contain the Hondata unit it's merely required if you're OBDII and wish to use Hondata. I know that was confusing so I'll give you an example...me:

When I made the decision to go with Hondata(s200) on my '96(OBDIIa) GSR I required an ECU swap to OBDI, a conversion harness(OBDIIa - OBDI) and the Hondata unit itself w/ a basemap. Compatible ECUs for this situation are the P72(OBDI GSR), P30(Del Sol?), and the P28(SOHC Civic). The cheapest and most widely available is the P28, so that's where I went. The ECU then has to be "prepped" for Hondata. I got the s200 from Rocket plugged the conversion harness in, the ECU to the harness, and the Hondata unit to the ECU. IMO if you're going to build your car up more in the future then definately go with the Hondata unit. You will require a setup very much like mine if you choose this route. OBDI ECU, harness, and Hondata unit.

ok so no matter what im going to have to get a p28 ecu? Would it have to be chipped with a Hondata chip in the p28? So i shouldnt get the ecu that i have pics posted ^ there? What is a good price for the Ecu i need with the harness?Whats a good place to get one?Does it matter which year its from as long as its a p28? Remeber i have a 97 obd2 GSR. U said that it has to be prepped for Hondata, is that what the Ecu above is?Wha exactly does that mean, like what do they do to modify it so it can be used for Hondata?........So i guess for now im just gonna get a p28 Ecu.Should i just go ahead and get a "chip" for it, like a mugen one or something, or should i just wait for the Hondata?I dont have like $800 right now so im gonna have to buy some at a time. And once i have the Ecu, wither cghipped or with a Hondata, would i still need a vtec controller, such as the apex, in order to change my vtec Xover point?Because isnt the Ecu programmed a certain way, and the controller just used for fuel and stuff?Iono im a newbie when it comes to Electronics..sorry! ....Well keep up the good comments and help..i likes! ...alrite hope to get some more help from you guys!

It'll cost you more in gas than the tuned Hondata eventually, and the performance will almost certainly be lower. One size fits all chips are not very usefull.
Does this mean you save more gas with a tuned hondata? Like more than stock? Is it possible to have more than one profile, like say for the track and one for daily driving?

Thanks, this has been an informative thread for me.

They're an inquisitive lot.

You'll have to swap to an OBDI ECU to run a chip or Hondata. It need not be a P28, but that's generally what's used since it's usually cheapest and most readily available. If what you have pictured there is a P28 prepped by Hondata then yes you should get it, if you can get it for a decent price. '92-'95 are OBDI. A couple capacitors and a couple ICs and one jumper are changed to prepare an ECU to accept Hondata. $175-200 ECU, $150ish Harness, $260ish Hondata. When you get the Hondata the dealer will burn a base map for you, this will get your car running. It will need to be dyno tuned by a Hondata dealer to be customized for your setup. I wouldn't bother with a "chip" in the meantime. Your Hondata dealer can change your fuel maps, your timing maps, your Vtec x-over, your idle...etc. You won't need a Vafc or any other toy. I still have a Vafc connected to mine though, I love the display. Hope this helps ya.

That comment was directed at the chips. Skunk2, Mugen, Jun...etc. They run notoriously rich. I suppose you could have 2 chips burned and swap them inside your ECU, or better yet 2 different ECUs w/ differing chips, but Hondata is really flexible I bet you could find a very nice "comprimise" for lack of a better term. A setup that would make you smile at the track and in rush hour traffic.
