My gsr has this weird ticking noise coming from motor/ bay area on the driver side when acclerating mostly when going uphill. This has been going on for a year now but still havent figured it out. I've checked for any loose crap but found nothing. could it possibly be a bad tensioner or water pump? again it only clicks or ticks when accelerating.any ideas would be great.

Does the ticking increase with with rpm's as you accelerate? What about when you go around turns?

Sounds like it could be an axle, but your description is vague.

its hard to explain...people keep on saying its the axle but its not. i can hear that it is coming from the motor, timing belt area. it sounds like loose metal rattling. i can hear it when i push on the gas pedal when in a higher gear but at a lower speed. once i hit the proper speed for that gear range then it seems to go away.

hmm..yeah that's a tough one. Probably something that is going to be tough to diagnose by description alone (i.e. one would need to hear the problem first hand).

How many miles on your car? has the timing belt/tensioner/water pump been replaced?

yea peeps gpt to hear it in order to even think about it...motor has about 5k since rebuild, timing belt and water pump are fairly new. tensioner was off my old motor thats why im thinking thats the problem. but not sure since my belt seems to be fine at the same time

hmmm interesting.Check your belts (maybe not your timing belt since you said it was fairly new), it might be worn or crack.That could be making the noise.Could also be a bad pulley from one of your other belts belts.

did u check the valves. mine did a loud tapping noise when i lost a bearing on the number one piston, but some people just need a valve adj. so check if it coming under the hood.

its not a valve. and everything is tight. nothing is loose timing belt, alt belt, and pwr steering belt. i have no ac. the only pulleys i have are the alt and pwr steering with the main crank pulley. alt is new and is still making the noise

check your spark plug wires to see if one is cut..had a friend that his wire was cut and it would make a wierd ticking noise. ?????..

The tensioners on b series motors usually don't go bad like the j series ones on mdxs,tls,etc..
but its right in the area you describe, so it could be

alright back from the dead....still having this issue. i have replaced timing belt just cuz i felt like it and timing belt tensioner to see if it was the tensioner itself. it does not sound like a valve or rod knock or any kind of loud tapping noise. it sounds like a stupid sleigh bell or someshit like that....its hard to get a video cuz my car is so loud and it only happens when driving. it also happens when im driving around 20 mph in 5th gear and i try to push hard on my gas pedal the noise would occur...any help is appreciated...

Have you considered the lost motion assembly.

They will make a ticking noise as they wear and get older?

i doubt its the lma's like i said the car idles perfect with no ticking knocking or any kind of unsual sound. there is also no weird noises when i open the throttle by hand. only happens when the car is accelerating up hill or when i try to pickup speed from a higher gear

If someone told me they had a ticking noise when accelerating uphill in a high gear I'd say with 95% confidence that it was detonation. Are you sure you aren't pinging?

Or is it only when driving???(SUSPESION PARTS)

when u hit bumps does the noise also get louder?are u sure it isnt the dizzy ticking really loud? u said when u punch it it ticks idk maybe it is the dizzy

the noise does not occur when the car is parked with the motor idleing. even when parked i can rev the **** out of it and it will not occur...

this is what i got from a website about detonation which could possibly be my problem. i did a compression check yesterday and it was 210 across the board and also checked my timing again with a timing gun today:

In everyday driving, detonation is most likely to be heard when the driver is using a gear too high for the engine speed and load conditions - like climbing a steep hill with the right foot flat to the floor, while in third gear and travelling at 40 km/h. Depending on the engine, detonation can sound like a 'ting, ting' noise, or even a little like coins rattling in a coin tray. However, in some engines, the audible note is much deeper when heard from the cabin. In turbo/blown cars, or cars where the compression ratio has been substantially increased, detonation can occur at high engine speed and high loads, making it very difficult for the driver to hear it over the general noise level that's present at the time.

is this something that tuning can fix? im doing a street tune this weekend...again this motor has never been tuned.

Sounds like detonation. Yes running lean can cause detonation. Have you pulled any plugs and looked at them? What octane fuel are you putting in your car? What pistons are you using, and what mods are done to your car?

damm how can u tell if you are runing to rich by lookin at your plugs? i changed mine and they where a lil brownish/prong was a lil white what does that mean?

'Pinging' is a name for the sound engines make when detonation is occurring. Detonation is more likely when compression is high, octane is low, cylinder temps are high, or the engine is too lean. It also happens when you're putting a high load on the engine and it is having trouble working against the load (i/e in high gear on a hill). I used to know why but can't remember. To me it sounds like marbles shaking around in a tin can.

Even factory engines have trouble with detonation if they are in too high of a gear for the kind of acceleration you're asking from them, but it'll be worse if you've done power adders that lean you out without doing a tune. White deposits on the spark plugs indicate detonation.

my plugs look fine. some have orange crap on the white part and i am running premium octane. i just installed my lc-1 wideband this past monday and it reads about 17.5 at idle. my brother in law who is good at tuning says im running way to lean. he'll be tuning my car this weekend

my setup:

b18c1 block bored to 81.5mm with usdm itr pistons.
stock gsr head with 00 ITR cams
Edelbrock Performer X IM with ITR TB.
JDM ITR 4-1 header
00 b16 tranny
chipped p28 w/itr basemap
redline 8500rpm
