Want better gas mileage??
Change your oxygen sensor!!
Several weeks ago I decided to change my O2 sensor, since it was original with over 240,000 miles on it. After my brother changed the one on his del Sol w/ about 165,000 on it and reported a significant increase in fuel economy, I thought I would try it. My O2 sensor was not triggering any CEL's or anything, but I figured a new one would have to be better than that old original one.
So I bought a Denso OEM O2 sensor with the factory harness plug and everything. Install was pretty easy since I had an impact wrench to get the old one off.
I did notice an increase in MPG around town, but today was the first chance I've had to test the difference with almost total highway driving. I haven't been out of town much over the past year or so, but the times that I have driven out of town I had been getting about 30-32 MPG.
So this morning I filled my tank to the brim, drove out of town to a business meeting, then on the way back I snapped this pic:
250 miles on only 1/2 tank
When I got back in town I filled up again, 323 miles on 9.24 gallons = 35 mpg!
So if your O2 sensor is old, I definitely suggest replacing it. You can actually get an NGK sensor for only about $50, comes w/ the OEM harness and everything.

Oh yeah, we'll be driving my car to Chicago for our honeymoon in August, over 500 miles each way. I am very confident I can get at least 400 miles on a single tank when it's 100% on the highway (hopefully non-stop).

I got mine through automedicsupply.com for the Denso sensor. It's like $95 though. I had already ordered it when I found out about the NGK sensors for $50.

Well I think it depends on how bad the original sensor is seized in the bung. On my brother's car (D16Z6 w/ O2 in the exhaust manifold up top), he had to replace the manifold because it was cracked. I tried to get his old sensor out of there, but I did not have air tools and it would not budge. So we ended up buying a new sensor to go into the new manifold, which is when he reported the increase in fuel economy.
On my car I lifted the front end up pretty high, unbolted the cat from the header and let the cat and B-pipe hang down. Then I had to use an O2 sensor socket (big slot up the side for the harness), which has a hex shape on the back end of the socket. Then I was able to fit another socket on my impact wrench over that O2 sensor socket and spin it right off. Put the new sensor in, tighten, bolt the exhaust back up, and plug in the harness, and done!
After I got the car back on the ground, I did pull my ECU backup fuse for a few seconds to reset the ECU, then put it back in and let the car idle for a few minutes so it could get used to the new and improved O2 sensor readings.

I bought mine on ebay:

NTK 24172 (with a harness) was what I needed, and it came out to 47 shipped.

I'm going to assume the 2nd, just because it's the one that usually does the readings, but I could be wrong. :-/ pretty much just a guess.

I think you'd need to change out both. The reason for having two is because of error checking. The first one makes the reading, and the second verifies that the first one's not effed up
As for which one needs to be replaced, might as well just do them both if your car's an oldie.

shoot I'm sure yours is still fine. Mine had almost 250k on it and it still had not set off any trouble codes, but as you can see it did make a difference.

How many miles would u recommend the change in O2 sensor. The reason i ask is i got a 99 with only 60,000 miles on it. Currently i get about 26-28 ish MPG.
And I don't mean to take over the thread but I had a question i ride my gas tank about 265 - 280 miles and i never seen my gas light come on. I ain't sure why this happens. Every time i fill it up its like 10.2 to 10.4 gallons too. Just wondering if there could be something wrong I should try to fix. Again not trying to take over this thread.

Re: Want better gas mileage?? (PatrickGSR94)
wow, you have more miles than I do.. going on 210k now on my 95 gsr. My 02 is over 100k miles old I think, and I am getting 30-31mpg currently. Maybe I'll try a new sensor and see if it helps.
I can normally go 330-350 miles per tank, and fill ups usually take 11 to 11.5 gallons (I think the total tank size is 13 gal).
Oh, my gas light only worked for the first year I owned the car. After that, it stopped coming on. Except this one time, it came on, and I was like "Hey! my gas light is working again!", and then I ran out of gas a few minutes later on the way to the gas station :-/

Maybe the float thingy in the gas tank gets stuck when it gets down that low and doesn't go all the way down. My gas light has always come on, without fail, with around 10 to 10.5 gallons used up. It will go on and off depending on which way my car leans (when turning) and will finally stay on steady after about 11.5 gallons have been used.
