TDC Timing Belt Question
I put in some head studs this weekend and this is the first time i messed with the timing belt. I thought everything was lined up correctly when I was done but when I checked it again the TDC mark on the pulley is off by about an 1/8" (left or the mark) or less when the cam gears are lined up correctly. Do you think the belt is just off a tooth? The car runs the same as it did before.

Re: TDC Timing Belt Question (jay jay)
Here are some pics to help describe what I'm talking about.
TDC
How the camgears line up TDC
Cam gears lined up
And the crank pulley when the cam gears are lined up
This is all when rotating the motor counterclockwise. If I rotate back a bit clockwise I can get everything to line up perfect, tdc with the cams lining up??

Re: TDC Timing Belt Question (gsr dood)
Do all the arrows line up when you have the belt off?
Before you hook off the belt, you should have used some red paint or nail polish and touch the cam gear and the belt with it so you could line it right back up when you finished.

I can get everything to line up when the belt is off. Do you think the crank pulley can shift at all? I was beating on it with an impact gun trying to remove it but it didn't come off. The car drives fine but everything was lined up exact before I removed it.

Re: (jay jay)
you know i have had two cars both dc's and i've always had that problem on my gsr and my lsv...i think its just how the cookie crumbles...i've tried like a million times to align the crank and the cam pulley's to no avail...i gave up and rode like what you had in the picture...you be fine...i just think that not everything will line up perfect...i still haven't seen anyones motor that lines up perfectly...

You mentioned that everything runs the same as prior to taking the belt off? If there have been no changes in the engine running and the performance of the car I wouldn't worry about the dashes. I could be wrong but isn't a tooth off at least noticeable when driving the car? Maybe not on stock internals.

Yes it is very noticiable when its a tooth off the car will perform horrible and probably make horrible noises.
I think you will be fine with how it is

did you properly install the belt over the exhaust cam gear before the intake cam gear, and did you also run through the proper belt tensioning procedure? Both of those could cause the belt to be slightly off if not done correctly.

u sure everything lined up perfectly before. i've done many belt swaps before and i've always never seen one that lined up perfectly. alway a little off or like yours. i don't know. maybe i've been doing belt changes all wrong too then. i might just suck. who knows. but i've been having the same problem over and over again. still can't fix my belt too. it still looks exactly like yours does. let me know when you figure it out cause i still can't.

Re: (jay jay)
Just did my brothers on his ls/vtec motor monday and everything lined up perfectly
Id say if your car is running normal then not to worry about it, you would notice a difference if you were off a tooth.
Also i just noticed that its off when you rotated the crankshaft, how many times did you rotate it? I was always taught to do 4 rotations and then check whether everything is still lined up.

Re: (EF'n C5)
still no answer?
i think it is because off this.
changing timing belt on engine cold.
marks on cams and crankgear spot on.
and now marks on crankpulley, they are for setting ignition timing wright?
we do that according to workshop manual, when engine is up to operating temp.
engine warm expands a little bringing the marks up.

Re: TDC Timing Belt Question
no. bringing the engine up to operating temp is for the engine to be at the proper warm idle to set ignition timing.
only way to really know if it is correct is to pull the pulley off and check the mark on the drive gear. pulleys can be off.
