Starter? Main relay? Crappy aftermarket caps/wires? Pissed off.
I've got an all original 94 GSR sedan I bought from the original owner at 140k miles. Besides the 90k maint., all he replaced was the distributor and maint. parts here and there.
I replaced the caps, wires, rotor, and plugs the first week I had it because it was evident after doing the compression test they were pretty worn out.
I didn't have any issues besides replacing the original radiator/hoses/thermostat until one day I went in to smoothie king with my girlfriend. The car has 146k miles now. I came outside and the car started and instantly couldn't hold an idle and died.
Tried couple more times, same thing, so I popped the hood and made sure all the connections were tight. This is probably 5 minutes since I first tried to start it and it died. Then the car started and would hold an idle for maybe 3 seconds, then die-so progress.
Did it all again as the aftermarket wires I got don't seem to fit perfectly in to the distributor.
This time it started up, drove it home, no issues and couldn't find anything wrong with it for 2 weeks. Last night I fill up with gas, and it did the exact same $hit. Got it started again after a few minutes but I can't diagnose it.
At this point I'm thinking Main relay [clicks fine but didn't check it while the car wasn't starting, only during times it wasn't giving me any issues], some ground as the car does shake a tiny* bit during idle [needs motor mounts as well], some ignition component, or the starter is going.
I could care less about replacing any of them, won't take more than a hundred and fifty bucks and an our of time.
I do NOT want to end up replacing all the aftermarket parts that are only 4k miles old with OEM stuff that's $$$, AND then the starter, AND then the main relay, only to have the same problem.
I had a similar issue with my LS400 and ended up selling it because NO ONE could figure it out. The starter died a month later on the new owner but I don't know if that fixed the problem.

I've had a similar problem, but it's only happened in high temperatures. >90 degress. It's hard to diagnose your problem, or mine for that matter.
