Running Rich?
Ok I have a 2000 GS-R with about 136000 miles. For the last 40k i noticed there is a build up of black soot around my rear bumper after a few hundred miles of washing it.
I understand this means its running rich but since i didnt do anything to it or tune it how could this have happen and what can i do to correct it. The car is white and i cant take this black crap on my rear all the time its gross and pain to clean.
Facts
Original Cat Conver
Original O2 Sensor
Original PCV Valve
Dist Cap changed about 30k ago
Dist Rotor 30k ago
Wires 30k ago
Plugs 20k ago
Air Filter 50k ago
Burns a lot of oil like qt every 1k maybe more
No CEL
Mods
RS-R Exhaust
AEM Short Ram
Any thoughts what this could be? If you need any other info just let me know. Please help me.

Re: Running Rich?
pcv valve stands for Positive crankcase ventilation. When ur engine is running it can create blow by (fuel mixture passing by the pistons rings) since our lovely america is so concerned with polution they dont want the fumes from the gas leaking out of the engines oil seals and gaskets and entering our atmosphere (reasoning gasoline contains high amouts of hydrocarbon which is bad) so this valve gives the blow by a place to go, usualy through a tube into the intake manifold. The valve is supoes to be a one way valve so if you take it off and blow through the end coming from the engine air should flow freely through it, if you turn it around you should not be able to blow through it. If you can blow through it both ways its no good. These valves are super cheap usualy no more than $10

Re: Running Rich?
there is no egr on a 2000 gsr
cleaning or replacing the pcv is smart.
how much oil are you burning?
do you, or have you had rich CEL codes?
black soot can be fuel but it's also common with oil burners

Re: Running Rich?
yeah im going to try and test out that pcv valve tonight. as for oil burning i would guess about 1 qt but no more than 2 every 1000 miles. i have no cel right now and havent had one for quite some time now.

Re: Running Rich?
if it's as much a 1qt every 500 miles that could be part of the black soot.
usually the gsr is on its last leg when it burns this much. typically you will chip an exhaust valve or fry a ringland when the engine goes.

Re: Running Rich?
UPDATE: Ok so i removed the PCV valve and it seemed to be working fine. Only allowed air to blow through one side. I replaced it with a brand new anyway. So i dont think that was the problem. Im going to do a compression test next. Im thinking my piston rings are worn and therefore oil is getting through and coming out the exhaust hence the black soot on bumper and above normla oil consumption.
