Nope.
The owner's manual and the service manual for the USIM GS-R both recommend 5W30 for all temperatures. They say that you can also use 10W30 if the outside temperatures stay above freezing, but 5W30 is still recommended as the preferred viscosity at those temperatures as well.

If it doesn't freeze where you live you can use 10w-30 just like nsxtasy stated... <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by nsxtasy »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

I have always used 10w-30 in all of my hondas, and I have run a 10w-30 synthetic for the last 3-1/2 years that I've owned my gsr.

Since you live in an area that's warm even in winter, you can use either 5W30 or 10W30. Honda says 5W30 is preferred but 10W30 is also acceptable.

10-30 synthetic will flow as easy or easier than 5-30 dino oil. As oil gets cold it gets thicker. That's why Honda mentions what it does on the weights. For the longest time i was under the impression that redline was about the best thing going. Then one day i was at one of the American Lemans Series races walking around the pits. The Audi Can-am car, the Corvette C5-R and Panoz all had mobil 1 bottles laying around. I now use Mobil 1 in both my cars. Change it every 5000 if i am just doing daily driving; every 2000-3000 or so if i'm doing light weekend racing.

you know as tight as the clearances are in the Honda motors, i'm not sure someone would gain anything by it. I mean we all know thicker oils cost power on the dyno since they are heavier thus more parasitic. Someone oughta find out what weight the Honda SCCA race teams are using.

if your gsr burns some what of oil, synthetic wud not be smart, it will just burn more and quicker, just use valvoline 5w 30, i barley burn any oil now, synth burns faster

NOT true, based on my experience. And, of course, synthetic oil provides greater protection against breakdown at high temperatures, and better flow characteristics at low temperatures.

well i find it to burn faster and ive searched and others said the same thing, so maybe your engine doesnt burn a lot of oil, so in my case, synth. is not a good idea

just changed my oil yesterday....mobil1 5w-30 full synthetic 4 quarts....the main thing is the oil filter-used mobil1 as well...says it catches 92% of junk...
my opinion is if you're burning oil, fix the problem...instead of hiding it by not giving your engine the best

Actually, it does. The GS-R (with 170K miles) burns the most oil of our cars, currently about one quart every 800 miles. But none of them burn more oil with synthetic than with conventional oil.
Use whatever you want, though. The thing about oil is, you're going to be changing it regularly anyway, so it's easy enough to try something different when you change it, and see how well it does. Anyone who's concerned about this can do his own testing, switching to different oils and keeping track of how much each one consumes.
