Default OBD0 to a OBD1????????

so i have a question for you guys. So I was searching the web and found out that 90-93 and 94-01 all have the same motor just a different engine codes. 90-91 only have 130hp, 92-93 have 140hp, and 94-01 have 142hp. Everything is exactly the same except for the OBD's. So heres my question, i have a 90 db w/ a obd0, if i switched to a obd1/2 would i get more power?? Would i get any issues by doing this, beside having to get a new dizzy, ecu, and obd converter wires??? Thanks for your help

werd...

there's a couple things that are different:

intake camshaft changed in 92. exhaust camshaft changed in 96.
head intake ports are larger for the B18B
intake manifold changed for B18B
header design changed for 92+
and the obvious OBD0 and OBD1 differences

To answer your question, doing an OBD0 - OBD1 conversion will not yield you any increase in HP whatsoever. The only benefit of running OBD1 is if you are planning to do modifications that require tuning in which case you would have to run some kind of engine management utility in conjunction with the OBD1 ECU.

In short, it would be a waste of time and money for you to do the conversion unless you are planning on upgrading your internals or boosting your car...

so, am i to understand that if i throw a vtec head on this b20 block, there is no need for a change to obd1? there will be no futre turbo or other large mods.is there an ecu that dosent need tuning to run a b20 vtec without custom tunning? thanx

I ran LS/VTEC on an untuned PR3 ECU. It ran 13.5 in the 1/4 mile on slicks. Stock internals. Only had I/H/E. I never put it on the dyno, but I beat the crap out of that thing for 3 years before I decided to go with a B16/turbo setup which I am currently running.

The point is this: you CAN run a B20/VTEC on an untuned ECU, but it would be better and more powerful if you got it tuned.

To answer your question, while there would not necessarily be a NEED to do the OBD 1 conversion, it certainly would not hurt because you would have more options for which type of tuning device you want to use: CROME, Neptune, Uberdata, Hondata, etc.

My recommendation to not do the conversion was based on the assumption that he would be running a regular LS motor. Adding a VTEC head to it completely changes the equation because you change things like compression ratio, cam profile, redline, etc.
