Manual tranny fluid?
I have a b16 motor I think it's a ys1 manual tranny I'm kinda confused on where to check the level and where to fill if needed. Also should I just use any 10w30 motor oil to fill it??
Thank you for any help pics of where to check and fill it would be really cool

No, not any motor oil. Use fluid designed for manual transmissions. GM Synchromesh Friction Modified manual tranny fluid is the way to go. You can find some at award chevy.

Re: Manual tranny fluid?
there is a 17mm oil fill plug its on the left side of the tranny the only way to check the fluid is to fill it till it start pouring out then it will be filled
your trans should take a lil over 2 qts to fill i believe
Honda MTF is good
but ive used 10w30 n 20w50 in my trans in the past with no problems

Re: Manual tranny fluid?
i've used 10w30 with no problems. also gm synchromesh works awesome
the fill plug is right next where the passenger axle connects to the tranny. i would recommend you to drain the old fluid and put some new oil.

Park on level ground. Theres a fill hole and a drain hole located on the lower passenger side of the tranny housing. First remove the fill bolt, then the drain bolt and drain the fluid. Put back the drain bolt and add fluid (~2 L) until the level of the fluid is up to the bottom of the fill hole. Put back the fill bolt and you're good to go. Don't let the tranny fluid touch anything rubber. If it does, wipe it off really well because it will corrode rubber boots and hoses.

Re: Manual tranny fluid?
I have a ys1 transmission with 223K mi that has always had Honda MTF in it. The trans still shifts perfect into all forward gears at 8700 rpm(B18c5)and it has definitely seen its share of abuse. I have also used 10w30 and 10w40 before in other Honda transmissions and it seemed to work well. I would still strongly recommend the Honda MTF.

the manual does say that 10W-30 motor oil is fine to use too.
DO NOT USE GM SYNCROMESH
Don't give advise unless you know for sure.
10W-30 is what Honda calls for and if your REALLY worried about it go to the dealership and buy their MTF there.
Use syncromesh ONLY if your desperate and want to patch a transmission thats grinding into gears as a temporary fix. More importantly be prepared to rebuild that transmission shortly after using it. It's NOT recommended for normal use- I can't stress this any more. Do your home work and research the boards.

Re: Manual tranny fluid?
I was just browsing the other threads on tranny fluid, and someone else had an interesting post up refuting the 10W30 as being outdated... Posted below:

What appears in older Honda automobile owner's manuals is outdated. Because of changes in motor oil chemistry starting around 1990, the correct lubricant to use in any Honda manual transmission is OEM Honda MTF (or possibly another lubricant made for manual transmissions). Do not use ordinary engine oil.
What happened around 1990 was that "the oil companies voluntarily reduced the amount of zinc content in most of their products after research indicated the zinc was responsible for premature deterioration and damage to catalytic converters." (See Is that Additive Really a Negative?, Road Rider Magazine, 1992.) But certain zinc additives are said to assist in "extreme pressure" conditions. (See Wikipedia, Motor Oil.) Thus a new lubricant with the right amount of zinc was needed. Today Honda Motor Company's literature states that the manual transmission fluid to use is Honda MTF. This overrides what older Honda automobile owner's manuals say about using ordinary engine oil (10W-30 or 10W-40) in the transmission.

Re: Manual tranny fluid?
From my experience, using Synchromesh with Friction Modifier #12377916 made my good transmission feel better. Been using it for about 3 years with no issues. It was about $12 a quart from the Chevy dealer

Same here. I barely race although, people who track their cars have gotten great results.

NO! Smart ***... Don't give advice if you dont know what your talking about.
Why is it the best? Fill us in why you should use it?

why? a lot of guys have put many many miles on GM synchro without an issue. no one has specifically not recommended gm synchro, then again it was never recommended either. i personally like redline mtf the best out of the 3 but this, honda mtf and gm synchro are all popular around here

Re: Manual tranny fluid?
Just so you guys know, the Honda MTF is most likely formulated for the new 6spd trans with triple synchros. Therefore, putting GM in versus Honda MTF is the same thing since both are not "truly" formulated for our trans. Also, I heard the new Honda MTF is similar to GM anyways because it has friction modifiers. Don't quote me on that just read it some where.
