help- which is bad? starter or battery?
a couple of weeks ago I went to crank the car and it just did one big click then tried again and started fine. did it again last night so got jumped off. I bought a new battery today thinking that was it but still doing same thing so I cleaned the posts on old battery and put the old one back in..after few more tries it cranks up several times in a row.... what else could it be..it seems to be a bigger click than what I remember in the past when my battery was dead.

Probably the starter. Mine started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. So I went to put my battery on charge, and like 10 seconds after plugging it in it said my battery was fully charged. So I had someone check it out and they said it was the starter. I haven't actually gotten a new one yet, but I'm hoping to get out to U-Pull-It within the next couple of days.
Anyone know about how much $$$ starters run for from junkyards?

I'm really not sure, I never had to do it or even have it done. Maybe someone could reply with info on having starters rebuilt. That could be another option.

Not that hard to replace, just a bitch to get out. My brother got his from a local shop for like 50 bucks used or so. Really shouldn't be a big deal to replace though.

--- I always forget to tell people this because I assume they already know it but.. Always check your wiring first. Give the wires on the Battery, Starter Solenoid, and Starter a little tug.. Sometimes a loose wire can cause some really wierd problems... ---
Wow, you replaced your Battery without properly testing it???..
Hmm.. Well here's what I think.. Try testing for Voltage going to the Solenoid and out of it while cranking.. There should be no more than a .3V difference between the B and M Terminals.. If there is, replace your Solenoid..
Or you could try it the old fashion way and bang on the STarter Housing with a Big F'n Hammer and hope to God that the Carbon Brushes move a little closer to the Commutator Bars..
I'd really like to help and give you more info.. But if you look for my posts in the TECH forum, you'll find a more thorough procedure on how to test a Starting System..
And whatever you do.. Good Luck!

I had the same problem in my 95 GSR. It wasnt the starter itself it was just the contacts where bad in the selonoid. Just take it to any starter rebuild shop and they should have new contacts. I fixed it all for 10.00 in parts I installed them myself. As far as getting it out of the car its easy.

Re: help- which is bad? starter or battery? (drag-in)
Its the GROUND WIRE. I had the EXACT problem, id get in, radio would turn on, and when id go to start it it would just click and stop. so i wiggled and wiggled the battery and ground wire and it started right up. what it was was the wire had so much corrosion on it and the frame, that when you send such a big amound of current like for the starter, it just couldnt ground it, so it wouldnt work. but it would ground enough for the small amound of current a radio uses. so clean up the battery area and youll be OK.
