Bad axle or ball joint?

Bad axle or ball joint?
I was backing out of a parking spot (not a lot of cars) and then i whipped the wheel to the right to swing the front end around to the left. Not THE wisest thing to do but i've dont it many times. Anyways during the turn I heard a big pop. after inspection I pulled the pasenger side trans side CV joint apart inside the boot. so I messed up the axle. But should this have happened? I havn't inspected the ball joint yet.
It was a remanfactured Autozone axle, but i can't imagien the axle should get puleld that much. Is something screwy? thanks.

did you drive it after this happened? The only way that the inner joint can be overextended that I know of is if the rest of the axle (the shaft and outboard joint) actually move outwards (as if you were to pull the shaft out w/o dislodging the inner joint first, if that makes any sense). I would definitely check the balljoints and other parts of the suspension to see if anything has come loose.

yea i had to drive it home. the ONLY thing that was different was the standard "major shaking on acceleration". if i was cruising, nothing was much different. if i had the clutch in, it was 100% normal. and yes, it appears that the axle moved "outward".

Well the only way that could have happened was for the entire hub assembly to move outward, thus pulling the axle shaft with it, and overextending the inner joint. Something has definitely broken or come loose on your suspension. Good thing you made it home, you're very lucky it didn't completely fall apart on you. Definitely don't drive the car again until you get it figured out.

thats so strange, because like i said, its messed up, but overall everything but the axle is still normal. On the way home steering and handling was still tight, no noises, sloshy feel or anything. I will for sure take a look at it when i fix it but what can i look for as in broken loose suspension? how can i "test" my ball joint. I need to drive from IN back to WI this weekend where I will then have lots of time to figure this out, but i NEED to get it home. There is no acura dealer here when i could get a ball joint or something.

in my shop we recently had a car come in with what sounds like a similar problem except their axle shot completely out of the tranny and the spindle came off the ball joint which made the tire go sideways and the car had to be towed in ....to be on the safe side we repleaced the axle, spindle ,and ball joint and there have been no complaints thus far and the car runs perfectly

Yo, that would be the GOOD news. I'm hoping thats the case and that I dont have to fix suspension components. I may replace the ball joint, will a 88-91CRX balljoint fit? Or any other year civic balljoint that I can get from Honda? I know we have autozone and advnaced but i'm not sure about putting generic parts on the car .

um there is nothing wrong with autozone driveshafts/axles
they arent too much money and have a life time replacement

The lifetime replacement thing always bugs me. The crap *** autozones have a lifetime warranty, while OEM NEW joints only have a 1 yr warranty. Which do you think is a bettter joint/lasts longer/find on MY car?

Re: Bad axle or ball joint? (MightyMouseTech)
if your smart enough to replace it yourself then its not too hard to replace it every 2 or so years FOR FREE, and if your snapping axles all the time and dont have the $$$ for DSS axles then this is fine
