Default B18b Versus b18a and b20

Ok, so i've got a 1992 Ls with 200,000k on the motor. I'm gonna do a swap soon. Can't afford a B18c, but here's what I'm thinking...

Does anyone actually know what the differences between obd1 B18a versus the B18b are? Apperantly 2 horsepower. Not very exciting.

I was just trying to decide between the cheaper swap of the B18b versus the b20. Why would honda revise an engine for only 2 horsepower? Surely it's got a better torque curve or something?

Anyways I can't seem to find to much information about either. Do I need to get a CRV ECU to do the B20 swap? I've got about $800 to spend on the project.

Thanks for all your help in advance!

The intake cam is alittle more agressive on the b18b and b20z. Not even noticable, so whatever you get a deal on go for it.

Reuse your integra ECU, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, flywheel/clutch. It will all bolt right up to the B20.

B20 with a J1 tranny would be a pretty nice setup (a tranny with 200k would worry me too). How much time you spend in Gwinnett? I was just wondering because of your name (sugarloafpkwy). I used to live in Kennesaw and moved to Lawrenceville about six months ago.

I think most B18As come with 130hp. Earlier B18Bs, the OBD Is came with 142. When the B18B switched over to OBDII, they lost 2hp, making 140.

If you are OBD I you should use your stock ecu for a B20Z engine. To use a B20Z ecu with OBD I wiring, I think a conversion harness is needed. You will have to tune for a B20Z if you decide to use your stock ecu.

I figured the B18 Ecu wouldn't know how to adjust the fuel/air ratio for that much more displacement. I'm not going to convert to ODB II, too much of a hasle.

Let's say I bought an OBD II B18 (B18b). do they have all the same wriing/sensors? Are the distributors interchangable? You can wire a B18b up and pretend it's an OBD I right?

the injector plugs from obd1 to obd2 are diffrent,,this depends on what harness you use
obd2 have crank angle sensors,as aposed to obd1

obd2 use (2)o2 sensors on your header as aposed to (1) on odb1 and abd2 also uses (2) intake o2 sensors as well as aposed to obd1

i tell people go obd1 easy to use ,and ya dont have to worry about trippin the check engine light after swapping in a new header

Ok you left out the B17, it's my fav. LOL I have 2 now. See my sig.
But yeah the differences in horespower ratings depend on the OBD.
If you have an OBD1 car you should just swap the OBD of the "new"engine to OBD1 and be done with it. OBD1, It's the better choice.
For tegs it works like this.
'90-91 = OBD0
'92-95 = OBD1
'96-'99? = OBD2
'00- = OBD2.5
