I know this seems like a stupid question and I've been searching for this answer for a while now and I'm not finding anything. I am trying to install my head gasket and I'm unsure of which direction is up. This is an OEM Honda head gasket. One side is all black and the other side is mostly black with a little bit of unpainted metal.

I downloaded a manual and it covers the install but skips what side is up. I am not new to the Honda game but I just can't find this bit of information.

does the manual only cover the head gasket?
or is it like the haynes manual?

Look on the head one side will have a cut out on it that will expose silver and it will say UP

It should only line up one way.

Alright, I see the tab and it says p75 I am assuming that the side I can read it up. I looked at it before but didn't see any writing on it.

Its not writing its actually cut out of the top layer metal to expose the middle layer. Generally located around cyl 2 or 3

The head gasket can be installed upside down which will cause the gasket to fail.

Oh ok, I found it. I attached a picture of it for anyone looking for the same information later. The dealership gave me the wrong head gasket and I have to go back and get the right one now. They gave me the p30 not the p75.

its pretty simple.. if yours doesnt say "up". then look at the coolant passages on the head and block..
