First off I'm still a 'noob.' I'm learning as I go along with my car's maintainance. I'm overdue to drain and refill my transmission fluid and I'm a little shocked at which fluid to use. I've read in my Haynes car manual and it says to use: API grade SF or SG engine oil - 10w30 or 10w40.

So is there anyone that has used motor oil in their tranny for their Honda? I have a D16z6 motor and tranny. I just don't want anything to go wrong. Thanks ahead of time.

 

I took motor oil (aka: engine oil) in my '93 civic and my '86 civic. You're doing fine :-) -elissa

 

I work for Valvoline when I'm away from college and I use 10w30 durablend in my 1993 d16z6 .

 

I forgot to ask how long does the transmission fluid's viscosity last. Doe's it break down fast and require drain and refills a lot?

 

Service duty determines what oil you need. If your car is at near stock power levels a good 10w-30 or honda MTF will be fine. I personally recommend synthetic. I have had good results with Mobil-1 15w-50 in my 6 speed, and 75w-90 in my turbo EG and BB6 Prelude. I also shoot for 15,000 mile changes on the N/A cars and 10,000 miles on the turbo.

i went to pep boys and talked to a guy that had SOHC turbo eg, and he used the valvoline straight 50 weight oil. i forget what its called, he also used it for his motor, saying it helped keep the 500 or so HP cool. haha. iono, he said that his sister works at honda and he has talked to the R&D guys about their tranny oil. and he points to the valvoline 50 weight quart of oil and goes, this is basically what they use. i just was wondering if that was true or not??

 

i think your best bet is to go to your local Zimbrick honda dealer and pick some tranny fluid up there. my buddy got his for like 3$/quart i think? not bad for OEM ****

 

IMO, Pennzoil Synchromesh or GM Synchromesh for transmission fluid.

 

I'm gonna go by what a HELMS manual says: 1996-2000 Honda Civic Book - Direct quote:
Genuine Honda MTF

Reccomended to be changed at 90,000 miles under normal conditions, 30,000 Under severe conditions.

Helms has spoken! And seriously, listen to em okay? I mean people, unless your motor is brand new, the tranny was designed for this fluid specifailly. There may be better tranny fluids out, but to be safe, go with Honda. The only other fluid I will vouch for is GM's Synchromesh if you got a old tranny and the synchros are goin bad.
Yes, for a D16Z6, I will reccomend Honda MTF, although I do not have the Helms book for this. Just remember, this book is a little better than haynes, its got every torque spec, is 100% detailed, was 65$, and is 1848 pages.

 

Can't go wrong with Honda MTF. They should know what oil works best seeing how they made the trannys.

 

I agree go to your Honda dealer ship and get Honda OEM manual transmission fluid. it will run you a bit more (some where in around $7.00 a quart) But thats petty change tot he price of your tranny

Don't forget there are some of us who are running our transmissions at 200%+ of their intended capacity. I'm not trusting the Honda MTF to have the film strength I need.

 

they use to say run enigne oil in the tranny but changed it to mtf. id run honda mtf on ur car instead.

 

honda MTF will hold up better than oil if your overstressing your tranny. Thats why if i was usin over 200%, id still use it and NOTHING else, cept maybe GM Synchromesh. This unless your like drag racing, but for streets, stick with Honda MTF.

Also, I reccomend against severely overstressing a D series tranny, specially the y7. Sctucturally, its not that of a y8 or a B series, and the synchros aint too tough.

Heres is my story on pennzoil synchromesh, i changed my tranny fluid out for the first time that i have own the car, and first time ever for all i know...

but i changed this and now my cars shifts sooooo smooth, like butter threw a hot knife...

i highly recomend

i've been pushing nearly 200hp through a y7 tranny for over 26k miles running 10w30 castrol syntec.

 

HONDA MTF or GM syncromesh

i ran 5w30 in my 99 EX tranny mated to my z6 motor for about a year. i recently changed over to Honda MTF and its much smoother. i currently run castrol 5w30 in my LS trans in my 92 hatch. after a while of driving it thins out pretty bad and its hard to get in gear. just my thoughts.

damn, i hope youre not referring to your 9psi d series... honestly, if you dont trust hondas manufacturing, the WTF are you driving a honda for?!

WTF do you think I was referring to?

9.9:1+properly built+properly tuned+9 psi = 192 WHP. If you don't believe me that's fine. I really don't give a **** anyway.

I do trust Honda's manufacturing, where did I say I didn't?

I prefer an oil with higher film strength for an application like mine where I am operating above design parameters.

The viscosity lasts for a very long time in a transmission. The real reason you need to replace it on a regular basis is to remove the tiny metal particles creation from gear friction. Some transmissions come with magnets to catch the particles. I'd get a service manual for your engine, if you don't already have one.

For your other question:
I use Mobil1 10w30 synthetic in my transmission.

 

NOooooooooooooooo man. Hit up your local honda dealership's parts center and get 3qts of Honda Genuine ATF/MTF, add some Lucas ATF conditioner to that your set for life
