instead of changing the final drive.....................
Can't you just change the diameter of the tires?
for example, if one has a 4.4 final with a 195/55 15, what would the final drive then become with a 195/50 15? or a 195/45 15?
will this method actually work just like a final drive?

actually you can...
but you limit yourself what kind of tires you can get... not many company produce 195/45/15 sizes.
second you don't gain much shown below, but still gain.
If final drive is 4.40 and tires are 195/55/15
When you change to tires to these sizes it will be like changine final drive ratio
195/50/15 final drive ratio changes to 4.55
195/45/15 final drive ratio changes to 4.71
People autocrossing uses this as an advantage over other competitors.
a 225/45/13 tire has a really small diameter and stock civic tires are 185/65/14 has diameter of 23.46. As you can see, the car will be lowered 1.25. plus he gains in the final drive ratio changes to 4.92 if he has a 4.40.

back to subject... one of the greatest street tires made is available in 195-45-15
toyo proxes T1-S
my friend has them on his EK hatch, and trust me... BIG difference over the 195-55-15 tires
I loved my Yokohama AVS 195/45/15's. Hehe...car accelerated great but you gotta live with a speedo that's off 5-7mph depending on speed.
Would the calculations differ between a 195/45/15 and a 215/45/15? ie, which part of these numbers constitute a final drive difference?

the seires (45,50,55)
ex. 205/45/16
205 = width (contact area)
45 = series (width sidewall)
16 = inside diameter
THe series and dianeter of the tire will both change the FD ratio

ok, but what about those of us with a 4.785 or 4.929 final?
What would these smaller tires effectively make the final then?
I intend to kick *** in autox next season! lol

formula?????
as well , does anyone know exactly how much it will alter your speedo? meaning if I change from a 195 55 15 to a 195 50 15 how off will my speedo be? what about a 195 45 15? is there a formula to calculate the difference in the speedo between the 2 tires thats correct? just curious because If I do infact go with a smaller diameter tire, I want to have some sort of idea on the correct speed im going, not just a guess

haha...ok well in all seriousness...this is a rare good topic of discussion...so those of us w/ the JDM F/D or the AKT F/D...and we run the 195/45/15's that would be some outrageous number eh?...<---Eric who is happy that this isn't another newbie topic on "the best cams set up, the best header etc. and Toda vs Jun etc " oh yeah and what happened to that FAQ suggestion eh?...Eric

On the subject... DO NOT RUN anything less than 195/50/15's on the street. 195/50/15's barely do a good enough job of not bending/cracking your rims. I can't imagine what 195/45/15's would be like. (Yes, I did run 195/50/15 P-zero's for 4 years on GSR and EK hatch... one night I hit a pothole and my $300 15" rim was bent.
)
Will that little tire trick kick you out of stock class in autox?

Quote: No, it won't kick you out of the class. But, if you shell out money to get new 195/45/15 T1S tire, you might as well pick up slicks.
Check out where I live man... I need a tire for wet and dry..
Hey, love him or hate him.. everyone has their own opinion of the man Ron Jeremy.
