Comptech Ice Box
Does anybody have a Comptech Ice Box on their GSR? Does it make your car louder? Is there any change in sound, horsepower, etc... I have a '95 GSR and I have a Type R intake on it now. Let me explain in case you don;t know what i'm talkin' about. The Type R's have a plastic pipe that goes into the fender well. It conects on to the resonater box. My brother in law had that intake and a GReddy exhaust and when he put it on the dyno, he gained 20 hp. So should I leave that intake or get a Comptech Ice Box. I work at Acura of Memphis and we are a certified Comptech dealer so I can get Comptech parts from work.
If you guys have any info. or answers I would greatly appreciate it!

On to your question...the Icebox will almost sound like your car with stock intake and no resonator. Try that out and you'll get an idea. Horsepower increase will be on par with other cold air intakes currently out there. Out of all, I'd choose the Icebox...filter on the top, less chance of hydrolock.
I have a GSr and I put my Comptech Icebox on 2 days ago. I love it!!!! I sounds allmost stock but when you hit about 5.5k rmps it gets a little rumble. I ran an open air box for a day before and that is deff. much louder. It doesn't have that AEM sound to it but imo the AEM sound gets annoying after a while. I would say go with the Icebox. If you have any more questions about it just ask.
I put the icebox on about 2 weeks ago. The car is not louder while just driving around or on the highway. It is slightly deeper but its not really noticable.....until you step on it.
At around 5.5K or 6K the fun begins. The car sounds much deeper than stock. It is louder but not so much to draw attention. I really like it. You can keep it quiet for daily driving or you can make it scream. Its great!
Also, there is a noticable power gain. The car pulls better after each shift and will not bog down as easily if you let the RPM's drop. I highly recomend one if you have the means.
The ITR intake is already a very free flowing intake so you do already have a good CAI.
But the Compech piece is also a good piece. Since you work there and can get the perts and probably a deal then I say go for it. The only suggestion I have is not getting the shiny SS short Pipe with the Comptech name embossed, It doesn't seem to do anything but make the engine bay a little more attractive.
I woulden't say it is noisy at all but, rather a more pleasing growlier sound that doesn't have any of that high pitched whine and whistle that the AEM has.
All in all a good performance mod.
Good luck,
A.

I'm serious. The '98 is OBD 2 so your power gains might not be as high. He said stock the '98 GSR put down about 130 to the wheels. When he dynoed it, even Dave at Daves Honda Haven (the only dyno in Memphis) said he couldn't believe it. It put down about 150 something. He has dyno charts.

Try diabloautosports.com, thats where I got mine. I have a 98 GSR and I got the Icebox and filter repacement and I am very happy with it. <--sorry if it doesn't make sense I had a few too many
I am currently looking into the Icebox. Dont get me wrong, I am extremely happy with my AEM and, despite what everyone says, the Icebox will never sound as good as the AEM, and I hardly find it annoying at all
. The reason for this is because winter is around the corner and being the paranoid person that I am, I just dont want to accidentally hit a puddle and prematurely end my engines life. I am still debating whether or not to get the Icebox or just switch to stock for the winter.
Horsepower wise, they all are about the same including the Injen, each one just has a pony or two above the other in different areas (as shown by the dyno plots posted in a previous related topic).
My question is, where can I find a good price on just the icebox and the filter from a reputable seller.

I got mine at the local Acura Dealer. They send out 10% off coupons for parts and service so I used one of those. 10% off the price on the Comptech web site is pretty hard to beat.

I think i'm just going to leave on my Type R intake. It actually is the least likely of cold air intakes to suck up water, since it's not right by the ground. I just need an exhaust to make a little more noise.
i have a 97 civic with a gsr and a short ram intake arm (tenzo shhhhhhhh!) anyway, i think an intake is an intake, but i like this icebox. my question is do i need to buy the comptech intake arm to make the icbox fit properly?

No you don't need the Comptech arm. You can use the stock rubber arm
You can also just use your stock OEM intake and get a Comptech foam OEM replacement filter. That way you don't have to spend $$$$ on an ICE box.

I tried an Icebox a few months ago after having an AEM for almost the life of my R. The Icebox is much better for me. The Icebox is much quieter, and I couldn't believe the better low end performance over the AEM. The up top power seems the same, but the below 5k rpm power is very nice with the Icebox. It also fits better and looks better than the AEM. I also got the Comptech intake tube to go with it and have been very happy.

130 to the wheels sucks for a GSR regardless if its OBD2 or not.
Well sorry. That is what GSR's have stock
What do you expect. What do you have that is soo special?

Whats with everyone talking about the AEM "whistle"? I have a CAI and i never hear any whistle, in fact its pretty quiet compared to my old short ram intake. I must just be used to the short ram, now the CAI sounds very quiet, but i like the sound it makes.
There should be a whistle sound when you first start your car and when driving it should whistle at certain points depending on how your much gas your applying.
