Default Automatic 97?

So what's wrong with it? At 114,000 Miles? Will it last 200k if all maintenince has been done, preventive, timing belt, you name it.

I have heard that Automatic is bad, but just how bad?

Hmm... i would be more skeptical about 114... thats plenty of time to abuse an engine. check how many owners it has had through carfax... if its more than two or maybe three i would be skeptical, espeically if it has mods. I bought mine with 105 thinking that the honda rep would do me some good, but my engine blew within a few hundred miles... I luckily already had my engine swap on its way being shipped.

I know the auto has a rep for problems, but im not the one to tell you about it... try the search button, i almost guarantee there is a thread or two in there that talks about it.

But even if it didn't have problems, i still wouldnt' want one.... 5sp baby.

well i took pretty good care of my tranny always took it to honda for a flush and fill and at 76,000 miles it acted wierd and would be in nutral when i let off the gas and kicked into gear when i push the gas then i parked it in the drive way not wanting to mess anything else up and now it wont even start keeps cranking i feel warm exaust out the tailpipe and just sounds like something is holding it back from starting really sux but im not paying 3,600 for a another auto tranny so ive been gathering everything up for a 5speed conversion so go with a 5speed i wish i did

That bites... you say "another auto tranny" have you gone through one already before the one you have?!?

And even if it has been taken care of.. not all engines are made equal. I know who owned a civic and bought it so that it'd last her a long time... No mods, and she took good care of it... and it blew on her at 70,000. Thats obviously not an every case scenerio tho.

The automatic prelude is nice, IF and only IF you take care of it:

1. It is auto, so keep it that way, the sport shift mode is useless, it is the big cause to the problems on it. It happened to me and it would give you problems. It is useful if you are racing from a roll, but not much, the torque converter takes the power away from the h22a4.

2. It is a monster on the highway at high speeds, don't come back here saying it is not fast on the street, it is not unless you know how to launch it and just floor it thinking of no cops in your area.

3. It is nice and beautiful IF all maintenance is done, ALL of it.

4. If you decide to get one, get an emissions warranty on the car, if for any reason something goes wrong with it up unitl 150k miles you are covered all around that engine. If the trans makes the car goes to poop, the trans will be replaced free of charge because of it.

It happened to me and i am on my second one, with less than 8k miles and it is nice and smooth, especially if you install a trans cooler, it helps a lot, it did to me.

Good luck, if you get one, let me know, i can help you out with the **** i do to it, the only thing i am bad at is washing it.

Hazem... I think that was the best explanation your gonna get... but still use that search to do some reasearch...

Oh and as young as you are... get an insurance quote BEFORE you buy the car... I didn't and now im spending twice as much a month on my car as I wanted to. I am 19... but I have three speeding tickets so im sure that doesn't help. But still... I would do it just to make sure you can still afford it.

That's sure the truth. You're innocent til proven guilty except when you want to borrow money or buy car insurance!

What is a trans cooler?

I have an auto lude and i like it, but i think i would like the five speed better. You can catch Vtec 5 times and its better on the highway...

A trans cooler "cools" the transmission oil return to the trans assembly when going to the original point (radiator) and back.

It is pretty useful for auto transmissions, as it cools the oil and it is not as thin( i think) and doesn't screw up your internals. I believe the oil needs to be thicker to run the internals smoothly and with enough ease and functionality.
