Is this Normal?
So I just built my LS VTEC with JE Pistons Eagle Rods 12.5:1 compression all new bearings balanced etc etc etc
I changed the oil today actually for the second time (1st time was startup) and the car had 2,000 miles on it.
The magnetic Drain plug contained this:

I am thinking it normal but I figured I would run it by you all.
REMEMBER it only has 2,000 miles on it...

there is always going to be some but as to how much is up to the builders.
A 100% perfectly clean job does not always happen, So expect some and keep checking.
I would cut open the oil filter and see whats inside there.

I spoke to a few people and everyone says its fine its just the rings shaving to make perfect fits and I have nothing to worry about. I guess we will see when I drop it again here in 500 miles or so thanks to my paranoid ***...

if your not experiencing any "oddness" or any signs of motor issues, i would suspect when they sleeved/honed the block they probably did not clean everything out.
is this good? well....its not the best scenario, but with hired help, you always have to expect the worst.
i wouldnt want all that metal floating around in the motor.
i would start changing the oil every 500-1000 miles or so for another 5000 miles, unless you plan on bringing the motor back to the guys to have a lookie.

on new motors i always tell people to drive it for 20miles (break-in) and change the oil, then change it every 500miles for like 2500miles. works great for me
i bet if you whould have changed your oil a little more often the shavings wouldn't have been there in 2000miles

for a newly built engine i'd say thats near enough normal, when i had my last integra B18C rebuilt i got the same crap on the drain plug after 500miles, i then changed the oil again after another 1000miles and had a few metal shavings and i then changed it again after another 1000miles and it was clean, so i figured everything had been caught at that stage, i checked it after every oil change after that and it was fine with maybe 4 or 5 metal shavings on it but nothing to worry about.

Good suggestions. You need to stop driving it and change the oil immediately, not in 500 more miles. You are overdue. New motor should be startup / 20, then 500 miles MAX on the 'second' oil change. Then 500 - 1000 more MAX on the third, especially rebuilt. New filter each time too. Oil is cheap insurance for all the work and money of a new mo. Continue monitoring the plug. If you get shavings, keep up the frequent (500 - 1K) change intervals for as long as 5K total. Some shavings are normal. At least you had the magnetic plug - good thinking!

thanks guys, you made me feel a lot better about this. I will definitely change it again at 500 miles and then again at 500 until they go away.
I appreciate all the help
I appreciate all the help
Well, treat it as you would a new car. Swap your original oil @ 1k 3k and again @ 5k, then start up a normal lube pattern
