WARNING:
1. If you want to sell the VAFC/SAFC later on you might want to reconsider doing this, since the buyer may or may not like the modification.

2. Be very careful when soldering because there is very limited amount of space to work with.


I've had my VAFC for awhile now, and the first thing i noticed when i got it was that the wire harness was really hard to detach and seemed really flimsy/delicate.

So what I decided to do was create my own harness.

Tools:
Soldering Iron & Solder
Shrink Tube
(1) 15 Pin Male Plug
(1) 15 Pin Female Plug
(2) 15 Pin Covers
and alot of patience


Here are the 15 Pin Plugs and Cover with some extra wire(more on that later)



First thing I did was cut the VAFC harness

The plugs fit together really snug and have not come undone by themselves. I am very confident that they will not come loose unless you physically pull them apart yourself.


And for the extra wire...I have always wanted to put my VAFC where I can see it on long drives, but since i did not feel like rerouting the cable from the harness. I decided that i would make another plug where i can mount my VAFC while still being able to keep the mounting point in the glove compartment.

So this is what I came up with...

I found a place in my car that would be most convenient for myself, so i chose to make a plug on the din pocket. This part is user preference.

Personally i like the new mounting plugs, in my opinion they are much easier for me to remove my VAFC. Additionally i can either keep my VAFC in the glove compartment or keep it within view by my stereo without having to deal with rerouting the cords.

Is that the same as a computer gameport plug?

 

Does it lose the settings if you keep unplugging it and stuff?

they are the same, the one i used is just a generic one. you can find them at any electronic store.

The only reason i didnt buy something smaller because the next one down was a 9-Pin and the VAFC has 11 wires.

I purchase all my stuff at a Orvac's Electronic in Fullerton on Raymond and Orangethorpe.

Nope...settings are retained until you reset them yourself

 

i got a wiring question. if i was to do this, all i hafta do is to make sure all the wires match eachother from both ends right?

 

damn that's clever. can't believe no one has thought of this yet. this how-to makes me wish i still had my vafc .

 

I did a similar thing with my Field AFC. I used Cat6 cable (6-pair) to go from the ECU to the cupholders... the wires in there are like 24-22awg. Anyway, the tach on the AFC fluctuates noticeably, like when driving at a constant speed, it would go up/down as much as 300rpm. The speedometer doesn't do it ever, seems 100% accurate (includes speedo in k/h). Do you think that the thin wire is the cause?

yep...make sure that the wires match or you might fry something

i don't know the cause for that, thats alot of fluctuation. Mine works just fine, works like the VAFC with the standard harness.

 

Looks good. how is it that you VAFC screen lloks like that? mine dosent. Like the display. How it has rev and thr twice?

1. go to 2-channel under the monitor menu and select Throttle and RPM.
2. then proceed to the display screen
3. press the up arrow.

anyone know where to get the wiring digram for a 91 ef, ecu pinouts/safc harness ?

 

i wired mine stright to the factory harness... i wish i bought an extension... shiet...
