Default CRX only starts 1/2 the time. Whats going on?

Ok here is the situation. I have been having problems with my CRX for a while now. Not wanting to start and stuff. It has not been too bad and all I have had to do is wait a few minutes and it would eventually start back up. But recently it has gotten to the point to where I have to wait 10-20 min for it to start.

The ECU is throwing codes for the 02 sensor and Fuel injectors even though I just had them replaced about a month back thinking that it was the problem with the starting up stuff. I also replaced my dist aswell in the same time period but it still is acting up.

The exhaust smells funny, not like normal. I dont know if it is just becuase it is humid out or not, but it smells like it is running rich. I have not really noticed any more fumes come out other than one time when it was sitting for 2 days and I started it and smoke for about 3 sec came out my exhaust.

I have no idea what the problem is and it really sucks when I am in a rush and quickly stop for something and have to wait for my car to start back up again. People looking at you like you are a ******* tool turning your car over then going back under the hood and then turning it over again and repeatiing the process over and over.

Anyone have any idea what is going on? I searched online and on HT and cant seem to figure out what the problem is. Please help me out.

Thanks

its the main relay under the dash in back of the coin holder. you can de-solder/re-solder the joints or go to NAPA and buy it there. costs $35 ~ $45.

ps, your welcome

Any reason why you came to that conclusion?

The main relay is what controls power to the starter. If its bad or going, it will not fully perform its job like a lazy teenager. Simply resolder or replace. - Darrell

Search Main Relay and you will see why he came to that conclusion. I replaced my Main Relay and it solved my problem.

People call it the Main Relay, But it is actually the Main Fuel Relay that needs replacing. The loud click you here when you turn on the ignition is the Main Fuel Relay, This is what controls the fuel pump turning off and on. Listen for the click when the car won't start, You will not hear it. It will not be related to your starter. Hope this helps!

This is when the most of the time it happens. When I pull into the gas station and after I fill up and pay then try and start it up it doesnt want to. So we have a consensus that it is the Main Fuel Relay? If so does anyone know a write up on how to replace it? Is it hard to replace?

Thanks

Ok I just removed the change thing and can see the relay. How do I remove it? I looked around and cant see where it is attached to. I pulled on it and wiggled it and it seems that it is attached behind the dash where it is not too easy to get access to it. Is there something Im missing or do I have to get at it by pulling out the dash?

I just went to my local Honda dealer and had the Main Fuel Relay replaced, It only cost me $79.00 and a 1/2 hour of waiting.

just changed the relay myself yesterday... its bolted to the drivers side wall... just remove the fuse panel and reach underneath (where the relay is) and feel your way down and u should find the bolt ... just use a wrench with a 10mm attachment... so unbolt, unplug, remove... then do the reverse with the new or repaired one...

my car kept on trowing a code 16 ( fuel injection ) but i was told earlier that my relay was going bad and now with the hot weather the only time my car would start was in the morning or at night... so i tested the car to see if it would start b4 i put the new one in (it was during the day) and still no start... so the moment i plugged the new one in i turned the ignition and it started right up and i kept turning off and on and no problems ( without letting it warm up) and that was something i couldnt ever since i got it.. ( a little over 2 years ago)

hope this helps...

post if u need anymore help

Thanks for all the help guys. I went to Honda and picked up the part and then stopped at my old work and when I left it wouldnt start . Then I went to the corner store to get some water and when I tried to start it back up it wouldnt . But finally I got it going again and made it home. Installed the relay in like 15 min or so and then it started up no problem. I tried it again like 5 min later and still no problem. But I dont know if it is just becuase my car wants to be nice or if the relay actually solved the problem. Whatever it seems to work so Im not going to worry about it.

Thanks again.

It might be hard if you have no arms and no legs blindfolded in the basement or loose your temper too much. The install was easy really straight forward. I will try and walk you through it.

Step 1: Remove the coin tray. Open the tray up and remove the 2 Phillips head screws in the top and then close it back up. Then under it in the middle back there is another screw remove that. It should just come right out.

Step 2: Tilt up your steering wheel as far as you can and remove the plastic fuse cover. The one that protect the wires not the actual panel with fuses in it. Then look in the hole that is there when you removed the change box. To the left you should see a black box that says something like Mitsuba RZ-0063 that is your fuel relay.

Step 3: Get a 10mm socket and an extention and remove the hood opener bottom screw. It is right in the way if you are using a rachet so it is nice to remove the bottom screw from and and loosen the top one so that you can rotate it out of your way.

Step 4: Now that the hood switch is out of the way take off the extention and put the socket directly on the rachet. If you look at your new relay you will see that there is a metal mounting piece that stickout out of the bottom of it. The same is true on the old one. So look at the relay in your car and the mount should be just below it. There is a 10mm bolt on there that is a bit tricky to get at but not too hard. If you have to you can remove the dash screw that is holding the dash in place to give you a little more room.

Step 5: Get the socket on there and remove the bolt. Now you have it unmounted and you should be able to wiggle the relay out of the hole where the change tray was. It wont come all the way out becuase it is wired in there but enough so that you can unplug the wires. Get your new relay and plug it in. This process takes like 1 min or less really simple. Like plugging in an extention cord effort wise.

Step 6: Now put it all back in there. Make sure your mount for the relay is in the correct position and with your fingers fiddle around in that area untill you get the bolt started. Then tighten it as much as you can by hand and then get that socket back in there and tighten it back up.

Step 7: Reattach your hood switch so that it is bolted back in place and tight. Dont worry it will be the exact same place as it was before and your hood will open just as good. Replace the fise cover and the change tray and start it up. You are done.

It took longer to write this that it did to actually do it.

Yes but I have not had time to reset my ECU. So it should be gone when I reset it.
