timesert installation (thanks DonF!)
mike(vteckidd) and i went to Florida today to visit a guy who builds and tunes honda blocks.
we took the crapper (with A/C, of course.)

the car was kinda full, but there was room for one more

we finally got there, and unloaded our crap so we could get to workin on it
mike and I both had the same problem. Our headbolts had pulled through leaving no threads in the block for the headstuds we had purchased to thread into.
fortunatly, Don has the perfect fix.
first off, we need to prepare the block.
this kit was made for him to repair honda blocks

this plate is used as a locating/centering device so that everyhting that is done is perfectly square in the hole and there are no off center issues.
what happens is that the plate is bolted down loosely, and then the pin sitting at the bottom of the plate is put thourgh the stripped out hole, centering the plate over that hole and then the plate is tighened down so that everything from here on out is centered. that other piece slides inot the hole first so that the dril bit has something to center in before it hits the block.

then you drill out the hole. this is a custom drill bit, as you can see it has a collet at the top which is used to make sure you do not drill past the bottom of the stock thread location in hte block. there are also some special notches and stuff u cannot see on the bit for the thread insert to lock in place.
you then clean out the hole, and tap it. alot of metal flakes were made so be sure the block is sealed off!

you then get another specialized bit and thread this piece onto it

this is a timesert thats been made specifically for cadillac blocks
but it fits ours just fine and is the same amount of threads as a stock setup.
as it is threaded down the t-bar that came with the set has a built in torque sensing device and when it hits the bottom of the block itll pop indicationg that its done. you then take a wrench to the tool and turn itabout 1/2 more which engages the botom threads of the insert to the block and fixes it into position.
after that we had to do the other block...

after this was done, he gave us a small sample of what he can do with heads.
this is what he called his street port. it was for a local custom of his(thanks for letting us post them up
)

this was a great learning experience for me, and don is always happy to help anyone out
if you guys need any repairs in teh future dont hesitate to call him!
(ill post his # up later)

I'll second that! Don's done way more with a Honda than anyone would believe.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the post on timesert. After reading the posts I found a guy out here in Gardena Ca called TAPEX that hooked up my B20. I thought I was going to loose the block, cause I had a couple of stripped head bolts. This guy charge a bill to do the job and my motor just dropped in my civic today. Like I said, thanks for the info, I was getting pretty desperate.
