Has anyone removed and reinstalled their gas tank? If so, I have a couple questions for you. First, how hard is it to remove? Are there any special tools that I would need to use to remove it? How hard is it to reinstall? Do you have any tips that might help things go smotther? If is not to much to ask, could you please give me a step-by-step how-to.

It's been awhile since I removed one, but here's what I remember.

1. Try to get the tank as empty as possible. If the car runs, drive it until empty.

2. Disconnect the battery. You're going to be dealing with a fuel pump and/or wires, you don't want to take a chance on any sparks igniting the fuel fumes.

3. Jack the rear of the car as high as possible; set it on jackstands.

4. Jack the jack up so that it's snug against the gas tank. (not to the point that you're jacking the car up more, but just so that when you start to unbolt the tank, it doesn't fall.

5. Remove all bolts/straps that hold the tank to the car. Depending on how the fuel pump is set up, disconnect any and all wires, disconnect and remove all lines.

6. With the tank unbolted, start to slowly lower the jack. While lowering the jack, double check for any missed bolts/wires/lines.

That's what I remember when I took one off a couple years ago. Hope that helps.

EDIT - I didn't reinstall the tank, so I can't offer any advice there. I just took it off a wrecked car.

 

In regards to the "straps" that hold the tank. How do you remove them? Are they reusable when reinstalling the tank or do you need to cut them and get new ones?

The car that I took the tank off of had flexible metal straps (maybe the better word would be long metal braces).

But if you take them off carefully, you should be able to reuse them.

Just out of curiousity, what type of car are you removing the tank from? What do you need to take the tank off for, does it have a hole?

Do you remember how to remove them?

The car is a 92 CX. There is nothing wrong with my tank, I'm removing it so I can gain access to the under side of the floor pan where the back seat is at. I'm currently installing a JDM interior and I want to weld some nuts on the under side of the floor pan so that I have something secure to mount the seat brackets to.

 

The straps/braces that I removed were simply bolted underneath the car, and went over the tank.

 

ok, so it's just a matter of removing some bolts and disconnect a couple lines and wires? Seems simple enough. Now I just need to do some extra driving to run the tank close to empty, thats not as easy as it sounds seeing that my exhaust just broke and it's louder then crap. Oh, the Apex WS will solve that. yeah the straps are held on with bolts. This pic shows you how they'll look. I think you can just loosen the #8 bolts and the straps will swing down allowing you to remove the tank.

 

I just thought of something.

The tank may be pressurized (the one I removed wasn't), so you may want to relieve the pressure at the fuel pressure regulator.

Couldn't I just do that by removing the gas cap?
