Default COATED MANIFOLD AND TURBO- Check this out

I just got my Turbo Manifold and Turbo Coated by Akari Motorsports just wanted to share, see what people on this board thought.

Akari Motorsports Turbo Coatings…

With coating turbos, you're going to accelerate the exhaust gas velocity which reduces back pressure and
increases turbo spool up time. Also by reducing the surface temperature of all exhaust components in the
engine bay, coated parts dramatically reduce under-hood temperatures.

Coating for Turbos :

There are a variety of reasons for coating an exhaust manifold header. #1 Corrosion protection. It is
well known that all turbos build up rust and corrosion because of the high temperatures that turbos
run on. The coatings used for all turbos and manifolds are Hight Temperatures and will not change
color or peel up to 2000 degrees. There are a number of benefits for this. First, by keeping heat
within the manifold and the turbo, you're going to accelerate the exhaust gas velocity which
reduces back pressure and reduces fuel contamination due to reversion. This is a performance
benefit. Second, you'll reduce the surface temperature of the manifold. If there is a component close
to it, it will not see as much heat as it would with an uncoated turbo. In any engine bay performance
is limited by the air intake temperature because of the turbo raising under-hood temperatures. Not
as much heat will be radiated under the hood or into the engine compartment with our High
Temperatures Thermal Barrier. This reduces the under-hood temperature which, again, reduces the
temperature of surrounding parts, such as, alternators and starters. Turbo compressor wheels and
back-plates can be coated with balancing that can be arranged with us.

By coating an exhaust manifold for a turbo quicker spool-up times can be achieved by keeping the
hot gas velocity very high.

Turbo manifolds, turbos, waste-gates and all turbo exhaust piping can all be coated. The end result
of a coated turbo or component will be better performance, better appearance, reduced corrosion
which means long-term improvement in appearance and will reduce component and under-hood
temperatures.

how thick is this?

it looks like it could put turbine clearances really close to the housing.

nice, i got the same turbo manifold also. it's going to be interesting how you assemble this. if you plan to have the turbo inlet close to cylinder 1 then your downpipe clearance is about 2.5". i have my intake turbine on the radiator side so my clearance on the turbo snail and the manifold is 1 mm. let me know if you got any pix. choiboi.

How thick on which part, coating or turbo?

I always wondered why these coatings are black as opposed to something that can reflect blackbody radiation (aka radiant heat) as well as conductive heat.

There are different colors of coatings if I'm not mistaken. Not that I know alot of thermal characteristics, but what would the color matter if it's under your hood . . . ?

Color is unimportant thermally as for as convective/conductive heat is concerned. That is heat transferred via a type a mass. That being a gas (air) or a solid (metal). However, radiant heat, EM radiation, can travel through vacuum (e.g. the sun's heat) and can only be reflected by optically reflective surfaces (like a mirror). Black is not optically reflective, in fact EMR passes right through it. So while the ceramic is insulating the conductive heat, all the radiant is passing right through it and don't think it's not significant. We warmed a heating filament to 600C (less than our egt's) is SS vacuum chamber with a least 18" of space between the filament and the wall of the chamber and the wall was hot to the touch. Sorry for the long post.

dude, you work for akari. you are just spamming the forums.

since you work for them. im curious about a few things.

what is the warranty on place of your coatings?
do you do coating process in house?
who actually makes the "coating" liquid that you use?
what R&D does akira do to make sure their coating process is worth the money, does its job, and will last a long time?
