Car: 95 CX Hatch
Motor: 1998 B18c1 running OBD1 Harness

I recently had to remove my transmission to fix a leak that was coming from the block. While that project took all day and worked out fine, after everything was all together, the next day the Speedo decided to not work. Low and Behold, I had just forgot to plug it back in. I plugged it in, and to no avail, the Speedo would work very intermittently. It also seemed to work dependently on RPM, and throttle position. If I got on it nearly at all, it would go nuts and then just die down.

In addition one day going to work, any time the accelerator was pressed over 25% I would say, the car would buck very hard, like it was cutting out, or misfiring. This has never happened, and may not be related at all.

As of now the condition it is in, is as follows. The Speedo will work for a few min of driving, and then it will start to jump, and then die. A few min after driving without the Speedo totally not functioning, I throw code 20.

So I got a helms, and followed the appropriate steps up to connecting a test harness between the ECU and wiring harness. I believe that it’s some kind of simple electrical diagnostic tool for Hondas. I obviously don’t have it.



Also, again does anyone know what those 2 wires do? Is that relay possibly just shot and they just wired it in so it would stay on or something? Thank you HT in advance. Lets try to get this resolved, as after searching, I didn't see one person resolve this issue with their cars after asking. check your grounds. you may have forgotten to put one back on or forgot to tighten a ground. bad grounds will cause bogging

 

All grounds are ok I believe. How many are there to check? Battery, Tranny, Valve cover, Thermo, any others im forgetting? Transmission removal only warrents the removal of the tranny ground, so i dont believe its that.

I Think he is talking about the harness grounds (one of them is a 10mm bolt on the thermostat housing) Try unpluging those to "jumper" wires and see what happens

Are you sure that the wiring harness didn't get stuck in between the tranny and block? Happened to me before and I had the same problem.

 

ya i was suggesting that when u were removing the tranny you could have damaged a wire or grounds. might want to double check

 

that could be, i'll check tomorrow morning, but i dont believe anything is in there, the tranny went right on without a problem...

Bump, im believing this is more "technical" then loose grounds and such.

I also discovered what those 2 red wires are, they are providing power to the relay for the blower motor, cause of the dash wiring or something. So thats not an issue.

Bump for some serious technical shiznit, i know its tech, and everyone is afraid...but it will be alright, trust me

I plan on borrowing someones whole underhood fusebox and plugging it in to my car, to see if that remmedys the situation. If it does, i know its the ELD. If not, its somewhere else, but according to helms, ether my ECU or my ELD is bad at this point. I don't have the test harness they show in the Helms to further the diagnosing, but im willing to bet its the ELD and not the ECU...hopefully anyway.

Could a short in the VSS wiring set off the ELD code?

I'll be testing all the vss wiring tomorrow, as per helms, and report back the outcome.
