I need a closer ratio steering rack for my EF (91 si)!!!
I already have a momo steering wheel (~380mm), but that is a band-aid to the problem. I simply need fewer turns lock to lock!
Has anyone fitted a better ratio rack into an EF?
Would one from say an ITR work?

You can use one from the DA Integra. Simply disassemble the body assembly, remove all the pistons and valves, reassemble, loop the lines back into each other, fill with fluid and voila; a better steering ratio w/o power steering.
For reference, here are the steering ratios of the EFs and DA.
DA- 3.5 turns lock to lock
EF DX/HF- 3.9 turns
Si- 4.1 turns
EG/DC2 racks will not fit. If they did, I'd have one in my car already...

Hey, thanks for the info!!!
All DA's have the same ratio racks?
Didn't some come without power steering? I'd prefer a manual rack if possible...
(Or maybe I should convert to PS for those 225 hoosiers? - SM ain't too forgiving this year...)

All USDM DAs had power steering, but I believe some JDM DAs (perhaps lower model ZC/B18A vehicles and maybe even the suedo "Type-R" RSi) came with a genuine manual rack. I have never seen one or heard about the specs on it, but I'm quite sure they're out there...

I totally agree with your there. I plan on keeping mine fully installed for a long time, but this method of converting it to a manual rack is the only way to fly.

Quaife are about to release rack and pinion parts for manual racks for the EFs and EGs. Rumored to be 2.5-2.8 turns lock to lock. Somewhere around $200. The boys are in jolly old England right now, and one of the things they are checking on is these parts.
Should have more news by the end of the week.

I thought that the parts from Quaife had been "about to come out" for quite awhile now...?

IIRC, Brian from Fastbrakes was going to get these made up... but I hadn't heard any updates on them and am getting anxious for something.
I'm prepping my little hatch for SM/ DM, and the next event is only 2 weeks away.....!
Who has definitive info on when these will be available?

Not even the boys at Quaife USA know for sure when they'll be available. I spoke to them about 3 weeks ago, and they were leaving for the UK to check on the status of several projects, the rack parts being one of them.
I will be checking back with them towards the end of this week to find out what they know.

OK folks,
More info from Quaife. Possibly the end of May, more likely sometime in mid June. EF will be 3.25 turns lock to lock. EG will be 2.8. Suggested retail will be $239. Looks like I'll be trying to retrofit an EG rack into my EF. The reason for the difference in ratios is the rack housings. The EG housing has more clearance for the larger pinion. Quaife does not want to make parts that would necessitate modifications to the housing. I'm also told by Quaife that the rack bar and pinion from the EG will not fit the EF housing, even with mods.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but this mod would not be legal in SM or SP for Solo2. No idea about road racing classes legality.
Otherwise, i'd be all over it...

iirc, they are legal for SM..... but it looks like I'll be running DM this season anyway......

Ok, thanks. Just found it in Jan Fastrack. Missed that one. I was referring to the initial suspension clarification which explicitly prohibited steering rack mods/replacement.
Even a 3.25 would be a major improvement to an EF rack buslike 4 turns ltl.

I do recall seeing that a steering quickener is legal in SM and Prepared. Basically a gearbox that fits on the steering shaft. I've seen them on a number of Prepared cars.
Yeah but isnt the DA rack p/s? Plugging and re-routing lines may work ok but it's not an ideal setup. Plus it's probably heavier. Bah, for $239 i'd rather just slap in a brand new rack and save myself the dicking around. Just IMO...
Its not a complete rack. Its just the rack bar and the pinion with bearing. You need to install it into your current (or a spare) rack housing.
