Very commonly asked question, this should be sufficient enough, here:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=421083 ******the Gearing debate***** This is the only one I should have posted but oh well. Read and your answer shall be there.

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=358403 Best transmission for turbo

You're screwed if you need to ask more questions, I watched you post 4 topics in about 3 minutes

**EDIT*** 5

No offense, but utilize the search to ask more efficient questions.

GSR, you can tell the people saying ls longer gears = in boost longer to stfu.

my friend had a ls tranny in his car then put a b16 in it and picked up .4 in the quater and 5 miles an hour.me on the other hand worked better with the ls trans because of the TIRE SIZE. but this year im going back with the b16

Tire size, power level, engine combination, have a big effect on what will work better...The main thing is to find out what will work better on your set-up....Do some searching, this topic has been covered quite a few times...

so the if I boosted a b18c and used the b16 tranny with LSD and the Type R final gear set would I be fine? because I want 275-320whp on a daily driven Civic.

Just as a "Transmissions for Dummies" type answer, just simplify it to GSR, Si, and ITR trans for NA, LS for boost. With the first 3 trannies on a 300hp turbo Honda you'll be redlining 4th at the end of the quarter with a 24" tire. With the LS and identical engine, you'll still have a healthy amout of RPM to go. This is assuming at least 300hp.

I switched to the gsr tranny because I blew the differential in my LS tranny and last week I went to the track. I ran the same exact times and had the same mph. I was running on some 24.5/8.5/13" slicks. I was running 12 psi on my LS engine (265 whp & 225 ft./lbs tq.). Personally I like the LS tranny better for my setup. Now when I finish the quarter mile I'm redlining in 4th gear, but when I had the LS tranny I finished at around 6000rpms. Also cruising the highway with the LS tranny is a lot better then with the gsr. In my LS tranny going 60mph at 2500rpm, with the gsr tranny 60 mph at 3000rpm. You'll get better gas milage with the LS tranny.

It's not really a matter of hp capability (which would actually be torque capability). This has to do with the gearing's max MPH. At about 300hp, you'll have enough power to stretch 4th gear completely out before finshing the QM with the Vtec trannies. The LS trans has taller gearing and a lower final drive so you won't be as high in the RPM at the same MPH in the same gear.

At only 265whp with a relatively small and common 24" slick I'm not surprised. As you get into the near 300's you'll see a massive difference with the two different tran's. Your 60' is more succeptible to wheel spin with the shorter Vtec trannies gearing and you'll either be bouncing off the limiter in 4th, or upshift to 5th and **** your MPH away. The LS trans will not hit the limiter till just beyond the QM at 300hp.

How long has that been around? I've been here awhile and never noticed it.

Hey autotronic316:::I say that the ls tranny can hold 150 whp, the b16 tranny can hold 180 whp, the gsr tranny can hold 220 whp, and the type r tranny can hold 250 whp.....Dont u see, these trannys can only hold what power rating they had from the factory...You jackass....

First of all, you got all the engine "whp"s wrong. None of those engines make the power thier "supposed" tranny is "supposedly" capable of holding.

There are many many many gus on honda-tech that run MUCH more power through trannies than their original engines hp with just clutch/flywheel upgraded(some with LSD)...

Dont flame other people if you dont know man...

type r tranny is best.

just look at the rpm drop going from 1st to 2nd. on my powercurve, the difference is about 75 whp comparing a gsr and a type r. our cars rev high and have a narrow powerband, so you what a tightly spaced gear ratio tranny. you lose some top speed, but that's why you go with a bigger tire effectively raising your final drive, assuming you have the power.

Umm.....I'd keep really quiet if I were you, lol. This is one of the stupidest things I've ever read on H-T. And that's saying a lot. I get the feeling that this is going to end up in someone's quote.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">our cars rev high and have a narrow powerband, so you what a tightly spaced gear ratio tranny.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Rev high..yes. Narrow powerband...well...read the name of the post: <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Re: gsr tranny or ls tranny better for boost?</TD></TR></TABLE>

In a boosted app, you don't need the narrow powerband.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">you lose some top speed, but that's why you go with a bigger tire effectively raising your final drive, assuming you have the power.</TD></TR></TABLE>

You can only fit so much tire under the wheel well. In addition to that, you're increasing the torque multiplication by going with lower gearing...then decreasing it with a taller tire. Not for nothing, but it sounds to me like the Vtec trans with an LS final drive would be one of the best all around combos for a car in the 300 range, but realistically - LS trans. You could always stay with the further gear ratios (makes for some nice MPH in the 1/4) and simply go with a shorter tire.
