valve adjustment?
i know i need a special toola nd i have a manula on ym car and it explains valve adjusting, but my question is when i remove the cover, how do i know what the cleareances should be at and when set at the specific height that it is done right? or is it best to take it to a shop and et them do it? i do hear a slight ticking noise when the engine has warmd up after driving it for a while? could this affect my performance of my car?
thx
thx
This is the type of work that kinda easy to do yet really easy to fug up. It's best to have someone w/ experience show you EXACTLY how to do it or just pay a pro to do it.
The clearances should be on the sticker under the hood and also listed in the manual.

somewhat similar note...
What exactly happens when the clearances are too tight or too loose? If they're too tight, does that mean the valves are opening sooner?
Too loose, opening later, probably not opening fully?
Or vice versa or am I totally off?
thanks

Speak of the devil. I just got done doing it on my R not 10 minutes ago. It is realy easy, just follow the manual. The clearances should be in the manual, but if not they are .15 for the intake and .17 for the exhaust. Simply take the valve cover off and turn the crank so the piston you are setting is at top dead center and adjust the valves. You will need the special tool to do the job, although some people say you can do it with out it.
If the valves are to lose they will tap and make alot of noise. If they are to tight, it might not let the valve set correctly when its closed.
On another not, my R only have 7,000 miles on it and every single valve was off and #2 was way off, I say by a good .2 mm. Oh well I made the adjustments and no more noise.

You can just re-use the valve cover gasket, right?

I reused mine cause it was 15k miles, it came off smoothly so it seemed alright.
I did it for a friend of mine and well the cover was REALLY hard to take off, and we ended up ripping the gasket so i had one of my friends drive to my place and get it from the tool box. Should replace it if you can....along with all the other stuff. Acura sells them in a "set" gasket, grommets and what not

Ok.. I bought all the parts and I'm waiting for them to come in..
Seems like a real easy job..
1 more question though. How the heck am I supposed to retorque the pulley bolt to 130 lb-ft? Or is it necessary? My 3/8" torque wrench only goes to ~80 lb-ft. Don't tell me I have to go out and buy a 1/2" torque wrench..
