The great final drive debate: JDM 4.7x vs ATS 4.9x vs ? What is best w/ 200 whp and why?
Ok, so many of us have the intended goal of 200+whp...
Assuming we eventually get into this ballpark, would a different final drive even help? I mean, we'll be spinning like crazy in the 1320... But maybe on a road course or autox it'll be more beneficial? I don't care about my top speed being reduced to 120 or so. It's insane to drive 140+ these days and I'm so over it.
But you can always swap out to a different 5th gear too... What 5th gear will equal the stock itr 5th gear if you change to jdm final drive or ats final drive? GSR? LS?
Anyway, can someone give me some idea of what final drive they are using with stock itr 1-4 and what 5th gear they are using?
I'm thinking seriously about this relatively affordable mod... But I'm concerned with whether it will even make any sense for a 200whp itr...
Also another question for the folks who have the JDM final drive: Did you use the same USDM gearing or did you use the JDM gearing?

I have almost 200whp (10 shy, but hopefully I will find it....) I am currently running 18 inch wheels with my JDM final drive and I cannot accelerate away fully (i.e. floored) without spinning the wheels...
Go figure.

With my 4.785 fd and usdm 1st-5th gear top speed is lowered by 8mph to 137ish which is 140+ indicated.

i am running a jdm tranny with 200+ whp and 1XX ft lbs of torque on road course. coming out of the corners i can spin the wheels in second gear. i am assumng my tires arent sticky enough so getting up to the power band the 4.785 is great. keeps you in the high rpms.

Nick, you'll probably be topping out if you put in the JDM final at Pocano, and your top speed will be reduced with the ATS. I'm sure chris(Rodney) will chime in a little later--He's had both, and Loves his ATS.
Personally, I will be getting the JDM, more because of a cost to performance aspect--The ATS is about twice the cost of the JDM, Plus I daily drive mine. But who knows, maybe, ehh chris

If you have like 200+whps and a 4.7+FD, you better get a longer 1st gear if you want to have traction. If not, the rev will be going up so fast that the tires will be still spinning when you shift into 2nd.
If you want a high top speed or low rpm on the highway, just get the ATS FD and ATS 1st, 2nd, and may be 3rd gear.

damn, i hate typing....just get a 4.93. you will not regret it. and no, your top speed will not suffer that much, trust me. i hit 8k in fifth on the back straight at pocono long course. with the 4.93 i will hit 8300. big deal. besides, with the spec b's you have a higher redline anywho. blackR, i just emailed you my phone #. call me. IMHO, anyone that wants a gsr or ls 5th is a whiny bitch.....just get the insight already if you want gas mileage. i think the jump from an itr 4th to ls or even gsr 5th is too much. i'm talking performance here. if you want a little less noise, slow down a little. damn, i still typed a lot...........
What about the Spoon final drive? can be had in 4.683, maybe a little milder for the whiney people. I bet its mad $$$ though
ATS has a bigger final drive then the JDM 4.785 but for the best bang will be JDM cuz its much mcuh cheaper.
IMO, ATS 4.929 is good enough for street,auto-X or track. If you are a hardcore racer I will sugggest you to use ATS 1-2-3-4-5 with 4.4 FD. This is the setup I have and I do a lot of track event and I found this is way better since I have run the Spoon 4.857 , JDM 4.785 and Cusco 5.0 FD.

Anyone have any experience with the KAAZ gear set? Sounded like it has even closer ratio than the ATS.
