Default Code 14, rough idle, 90 Accord

Hi, we have a 90 Accord LX with 163K miles on it. The idle is kinda rough. The idle speed is dead on, and ignition timing is correct at 15 degrees.

I checked for codes and get EACV, code 14, which is the Electronic Air Control Valve which allows the proper amount of air to pass through the TB at idle. I have a Popular Mechanics CD ROM repair, and it gives step by step instructions on what to do.

The first thing it told me to do was measure resistance between the terminals on the EACV, which I got to be 12 ohms. The chart said if it wasn't between 8 and 15 ohms, to replace it. Since it was, i went to next step, which was check for continuity between the terminal and body ground. I did that and put my meter on the TB right next to the sensor with no continuity, so i went to the next step. (if it did have continuity, it told me to replace EACV). Next it told me to measure voltage at the connector with the ignition on, and there was voltage. If I got voltage, it then tells me to check wires at the ECU, possibly for a short between a few wires. I have not done that yet, and I will. But all in all, could it be that I just have a bad EACV?? Anyone else ever had this problem? I mean, i get a code 14, i have bad idle, so should I just replace the EACV? It's like 150 brand new from honda, so i think i'll hit a junkyard and see what happens?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Kevin

Join the club buddy. 4th gen Accords have distributor problems which cause rough idles and distributors to fail. I installed Bosch +4 Platinum plugs which helped the vibration a little. But I wish I knew the cureall.

Hey man. I put a link to this post over in the Tech (https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=77065)forum, 'cause folks over there really know their Hondas.

Hey thanks! OH yeah, due to a no start condition over a year ago, I completely replaced the distributor. New sensors, housing, coil, igniter right from Honda.

As soon as someone finds the solution, please let me know.
I heard there was a recall on these cars just for this reason, and that you can bring them back and they will fix it for free. Please let me know about this as well.

Um the only recall I know that's remotely on-topic was for a bad distributor bearing. That's a problem you hear more than feel. Horrible noise.
