91 crx water leak?
i was driving last night noticed that water started to come in on the right hand side in the trunk where the tailgate support struts attach to allow the trunk to open up...im missin the molding on the outside that runs across the top of the rear windshield could that be the reason the water is comming in?....any suggestions on how to stop this from happening?
Man, you and everyone else have that leak. I have it too, and I don't think it's from the molding, because mine is okay. I think it's coming from farther up on the roof, like the strip that runs along the right side of the roof where the body seam is. It seems to leak less when the car is tilted forward and the water can run to the front. If you find anything that helps, let me know, I'd love to seal that up.
ya i heard that supposely "all crx's" supposely get this at sometime but i thought it was my friend just lieing to me....but i guess its true..i see where its comming from but dont know how to stop it...im missing the top molding on the rear wind shield..i guess ill try putting that new molding on hopefully that will stop it..if not i guess ill drill two little holes that way the water can drain bc at times it can really build up...if you guys come up with any ideas let me know..ill let you know how the new molding turns out
Alright guys heres some things to check out.
If you have a Si make sure you sunroof drain tubes are clear! make sure of that or you will get some nasty rusting and leaking.
You could also pull down the headliner and check the 4 corners of the sunroof frame and make sure there not rusted though.
Second make sure your rear windshield squirter is sealed up nicely, it should move around on the roof.
Third, check all the moulding around the hatch make sure its in place and theres no leaves clogged up.
Thats about it! The squirter was the culprit on my 88 Si, but its now shaved off along with the sunroof and rear wiper, so there not threats!
Good luck

Alright. If you have a SI this applies to you since you have a sunroof.
when water lands on the sunroof it will ofcourse fall down in there, the sunroof dosent make a perfect seal with the roof. Than in each corner of the sunroof frame there is a drain tube, each corner exits with its coresponding corner of the veichle. The rears are under the bumper, the fronts are in the same place.
These drain tubes can get clogged up with water and water wont flow out of the sunroof, the water will sit in the top of the sunroof area and rust slowly. So it can rust a hole and get into your interior.
To check this, simply pull down your headliner, you will have to remove your rear-view mirror, your sunvisors, and i belive a few other things, be carfull removing it, it juts snaps down. Next you will see a motor some wiring and all sorts of goodies. You will also see the sunroof drain tubes, they are orange. Pull them off and see if there clooged just by looking, next blow them out with air. Be carefull not to use too much pressure or they could blow off at the bottom on their little connectors and you will have to remove some interior panelling to help get them back on or the water will leak and sit in sorta a bubble and rust everything.
With the headliner off look at the frame, if you see and rusting marks it would be a good idea to remove the frame (i belive 8-12 nuts) than fix the rust holes by welding them up or whatever.
Remember a hole in the sunroof frame will allow water to go onto your plastic roof pannel at the back and leak
hope that clears things up. Personally i hate sunroofs 35lbs at the top of your car, remove it makes your car handle better since it has a lower centre of gravity. There is a member on this board who sells very good quality carbon fiber sunroof plugs. You can find it by searching for crx sunroof plug.

My 91 Si leaked all the time too and I will garuntee if you fix this list of things it will stop.
1. take your rear squiter off and put a little clear silicone around it then put it back in and wipe the excess silicone that squishes out off.
2. look on the roof of your car there are 2 long black strips that start at the front windshield and go all the way to the back hatch.(one on the driver side and one on the passenger) Pull them up and clean all the way down it with alcohol. Run a nice bead all the way down and put the black strip back in. (this take patients to get the stripping to look right again.)
Go to honda and buy new tail light seals and replace your old ones.
It seems like alot of work but it is worth it to have no leaks. Mine leaked for about 2 yrs and finally I tried this and it has not leaked a drop since and my car smells 100% better.
hope that helps

Im wondering what you mean about these black strips. I know exactly which ones your talking about.
Are you saying they can actually be removed- and re-installed? If so im intereseted. Im doing some body work and im curious as to what has gotten under there, if any rust is starting to form that will suddenly pop up.

anther thing you may want to look at... were the quarter panel meats the roof panel.(next to the hinges in the hatch) this aera is filed with seam sealer for water protection. on my hatch water would get under this seal and leak into the car from behind the trimpanals. to fix it i had to tack off the hatch (this is not a one person oppatron) and dig all the old sealant out and reapply the sealant. it does not leak any more. but be shore to chick the squiter. good luck

I just used regular silicone that you get at an auto parts store. It has worked greta. About the two black strips on the roof you could just pull it up about 1 foot back and put a little silicone under it there. I took mine completely off cleaned it real well put some silicone in there and put the stripping back down. It took a little work to get it to look right but no more leaks.

CRAP. All 4 of my hondas suffer from the water in the spare tire well. And the old basement smell is now pissing me off in my (new to me) 89 civic SI autox car. Sunroof is also leaking in both my 89 civic si's. Looks like it's time for me to seam seal some crap and start blowing tubes out. DAMNIT. Though I love these cars, Honda's R&D on water leaking should be fired.

I had the same problem and a guy(can't remember who) recommended soaking the tail light seals in warm soapy water and then letting them dry. He said this helped perk them up and not look so pruny and then he sealed them in. Said it worked like a charm...may want to try that before spending the $30 or so those seals cost from Honda.
